Ready To Drive! 1962 Jaguar Mark II 3.8

Authentic Motorcars of Redmond, Washington, has just reduced the price to $30,000 for its lovely and tastefully updated 1962 Jaguar 3.8-liter Mark II, listed on Craigslist in Redmond, Washington. If you can cough up that much scratch, this is a car to consider, because it’s had $60,000 in mechanical restoration and improvements over the most recent owner’s nine-year history with it. Remember, buy the best car you can afford!

Some of these cars have gotten later five-speed gearboxes replacing the sometimes recalcitrant four-speed Moss originals (with overdrive), but this one has the original, as well as its numbers-matching 3.8-liter twin-cam straight-six motor. There’s 63,000 miles on the odometer.

In 2023, the Jag got its oil changed, new plugs, an electronic ignition, and a battery tender. In 2018, the suspension bushings were renewed, and it got upper and lower ball joints with an alignment. In 2016, it was a very complete brake job, along with a new fuel tank and lines, a tune-up, rear wheel bearings, and axle seals. The differential was rebuilt, a new battery fitted, and the instruments reconditioned. Earlier that year, a new Genair AC system was fitted, along with a new radiator and fan. In 2015, the carbs were rebuilt, and a new distributor and motor mounts were installed. It goes on and on.

The black body and interior of this car look very nice in the excellent photography, but the car is admittedly not concours-ready. The vendor says, with full disclosure, “Overall, this is a nice mechanically sorted Jaguar that should give you many miles of fun driving. The bodywork was repainted some time ago, and the finish still shines well and looks good, but there are numerous age-related defects, including cracks, bubbles, and chips here and there. There are some minor rust bubbles on the lower skins of both rear doors but according to the owner these were there in 2015 and have not gotten any worse since.”

Also needing doing is the trim around the windows and the door handles. Redoing the leather and burl walnut wood on these cars can be very expensive, but fortunately, all is well there. The headliner was redone, the carpets are fine, as are both bumpers and the wheels and tires.

“Overall,” the seller says, “we would classify this MK II as a condition 3 car on the Hagerty rating scale, it is a nice driver that can be taken to your local car show or cars and coffee but it’s not a concours car. The car can easily be enjoyed as it is now or could be improved by some paint repairs and brightwork replating in the future.”

This Mark II is in the ideal configuration, with the wire wheels and the four-speed with overdrive.  It has a lovely, lived-in patina. The 3.8 also went into the E-Type, and it’s a fine powerplant for this elegant four-door performance sedan. Hagerty puts the 1962 Mark II in “good” condition at $29,000, so we’re in the ballpark with this offering. Maybe there’s some wiggle room, and you’d walk away with a bargain.

Very good write up and what appears to be to be an honest presentation . I have a very similar white 1963 Mark 2 just listed on EBay a day ago, only mine is white with a red leather interior. Same 3.8 and 4 speed even. These are such works of art, and with 225 hp and overdrive, they can cruise comfortably with today’s traffic speeds. Great car!!

Nice to see a good one of these with a stick…..It’s the only way for me to have one…. I have no interest in an automatic……….

Perfect car. IMHO the most beautiful car ever. As my age advances these make more and more sense to me. Age makes an automatic look pretty good too.Very good write up.

Agree. As everyone on this site painfully knows, beauty in cars has gone south since this one made its appearance. There are a few remaining exceptions in Italy. But that’s about it. Jaguar even dumped the beautiful cat from its hood.

Sometimes rust doesn’t seem to grow. In 1991, I bought an Alfa Spider with two small rust bubbles on the edge of a fender lip. Today they look exactly the same. Am I just living right?

Was this a left hand drive conversion at some point. The windscreen wipers are configured for a right hand drive.

Seats are 100% wrong for a MK2! They appear to be seat covers! Sad, for the car almost hit a homerun! For so much money spent, I am wondering why they didn’t do them right?
