Ready to Run: 1968 Ford F-100 Short Bed

I love Bumpside Ford pickups, the 5th generation trucks that were produced from 1967 to 1972. Nicknamed “Bumpside” for the distinct raised body line that runs down each side. This particular truck is a 1968 short bed and can be found here on eBay with a current bid of $2,325. There’s several days left in the bidding, so the price is bound to go up. Thanks to several television shows featuring these trucks, they have become very popular in the past few years. This one is located in Rockdale, Texas and I’m surprised one of those Dallas-based television hot rod shows hasn’t snatched this one up yet!

The ad states that almost every part of the truck has been addressed since purchased from the previous owner. The cooling system, fuel system, brakes, suspension, seals, etc. have all been gone through. The engine is a straight six along with an automatic transmission. These straight sixes run forever and this one is said to have been rebuilt about 25,000 miles ago. This truck appears like it is ready for years of reliable service for the new owner.

The interior is said to be mostly original including the seat and floor mat. There has been new door and window seals installed. You can see a bit of rust around the door hinges. The seller is up front about the fact that some rust issues have been addressed already, but some still lingers. The truck appears to be fairly solid though.

This truck has great patina. It has been clear coated and would be great for a shop truck or way to advertise your business. It is a short bed, which is highly desirable. A majority of these trucks were long beds and some people feel the short beds make for better performance. I’m not sure about you, but I’d probably take off the rear bumper. What do you think?     Sweet! Could do wihout the patina preservation. See that ’57 Imperial sinking into the ground behind the truck? Or all the other trucks lined up! Boy howdy!

    If you’d asked me yesterday if I wanted one of these I’d have emphatically said “no”. But some rigs just have a personality that hits home (like the ’39 fordor Ford I had a few years ago) and this one does. Worse, it’s only 46 miles or so from me. Hmmmmm. Smart seller: good pics, good description, went with a 10 day auction. Half way through it’s just under $4k, with only 12 bidders in. The under $2k-ish crowd has likely dropped out, and soon the under $4k-ish bunch will clear. Probably be a few days of little to no activity of significance with the real action coming near close. Yeah too much analysis for a guy whose “not interested”. And yeah, that rear boat anchor bumper would have to go in favor of a twin to the front bumper.

    You had me at Bumpside… great old truck, and I’d keep that cool looking rear bumper. Crown Vic front end and a 5.0 Coyote, all the way!

    The 240 six banger. Those and the 300 are as bulletproof as you can get. If my memory is correct, a lot of parts can be shared between the two.

    slap the plates on them and go!! These were such great trucks that would run forever with a little care, I’d prefer 3 on the tree, but that C4 tranny is as good as it gets for a slush o matic!! Need to check the cab mounts real good, as they were right behind the wheels and caught all the road gunk.

      67 1/2, it has 68 doors, nice truck worth 5k with simple paint and body it would be worth 15K

    I don’t think the side markers come along until 1970, that differentiates these trucks. I redid a 69 and 70 for a friend who won the lottery.

      Side markers were required on 1968 cars. I assume trucks also.

    Nice ‘ol Ford pick-em-up ** I agree with Canuck on the 5.0 up grade**….hook up the ‘ol canned ham trailer in the back ground (after a paint color change to match the truck color of yer choice). That would be a fun pair to take to yer local car show.

    Have loved this style ever my dad got one when I was about 10 or 11 years old. His was purple over white. Oh and I hate that nickname

    Those sixes do last forever but I’ve got a fairly fresh ‘67 390 sitting in the shop…
    I’d lose the “patina” immediately though and make her purty again.

    Something strange about this one. The squeeze type inside door handles say it’s a 68. The lack of side reflectors say it’s a 67.
