Recently Restored: 1968 Pontiac GTO

Many enthusiasts harbor dreams of tackling a project build, but circumstances dictate that won’t happen. They can either scrap the idea of classic ownership entirely or hand over their cash for a turnkey proposition like this 1968 Pontiac GTO. It presents superbly following a recent cosmetic refresh, leaving the winning bidder to do nothing but slip behind the wheel to enjoy all it offers. The GTO is listed here on eBay in  Meridian, Idaho. Bidding has raced beyond the reserve to sit at $28,000.

Pontiac released its Second Generation GTO in 1968, with the new offering sharing few styling cues with its predecessor. The company managed to soften its lines, but the GTO didn’t lose the aggressive appearance that marked it as a genuine muscle car. This Pontiac wears Verdoro Green with a Black vinyl top. The seller indicates it underwent a recent cosmetic refresh, which makes its stunning presentation unsurprising. The paint holds a depth of color and shine that is guaranteed to turn heads, cloaking panels as straight as an arrow. The process may have been cosmetic, but the underside shots suggest no significant rust required attention. They reveal the floors and frame of this garage-kept classic to be rock-solid, with only the occasional light dusting of surface corrosion. The vinyl is excellent, as is the tinted glass. The sparkling chrome and trim contrast with that deep Green paint, and the car rolls on spotless 14″ Rally II wheels with trim rings and tires by the good folks at BF Goodrich.

The exterior wasn’t the only aspect of this GTO to receive TLC because its interior received similar attention. It is unclear how much of the original Black vinyl upholstery was replaced, but the overall impression is extremely positive. There are no signs of wear or neglect and no aftermarket additions. The dash and pad are spotless, the faux woodgrain has avoided the typical deterioration, and the carpet is free from wear and fading. It doesn’t simply look great because spending time inside this classic would be a pleasant experience. It features a wood-rimmed wheel, bucket seats, a console, air conditioning, an AM radio, and a factory 8-track player.

Powering this GTO is a 400ci V8, with the remaining major mechanical components including a three-speed automatic transmission, a limited-slip rear end, power steering, and power brakes. That V8 should produce 350hp and 445 ft/lbs of torque, with the ¼-mile ET of 14.7 seconds confirming this is a genuine muscle car. It is unclear whether this GTO is numbers-matching, but the engine bay presents as impressively as every other aspect of the vehicle. The seller recently repacked the wheel bearings, adjusted the brakes, performed an alignment, changed the oil, and installed a new air filter. They confirm that this leak-free classic is in excellent mechanical health and that potential buyers could fly in and drive it home.

The word “legend” is overused in the classic world, with people sometimes attaching the tag to cars that probably don’t deserve it. However, no such questions hang over the 1968 Pontiac GTO. It has cemented its place in automotive folklore, and good examples are highly sought after. The total of eighteen bids submitted on this car at the time of writing is lower than might typically be expected, but some people may be holding back. They might join the bidding war in the auction’s dying moments, pushing the price significantly higher. A GTO of this caliber would generally sell for over $35,000, but with the reserve already passed, it could sell for less if the action doesn’t intensify. That should make this auction worth monitoring. Someone could score a bargain if things don’t change. I would be delighted if that person were one of our loyal readers.

Looks identical to one my best friend had. Same color, top, interior, engine, tranny etc. Lost it to a drunk driving one night in heavy fog. One of those anomalies which came out of the factory a tick faster than other stock GTO’s. Man, it was a beautiful and fun car.

These are such beauties. I’ve long been partial to the ’69 bc that was my brother’s car but the ’68 it coming move appealing to me now. The green is perfect for these. As I get older air and automatic are beginning to make sense on these cars.

OK friends of bf. I live about 23 miles from this car. If anyone would like a detailed live photo shoot of the Goat let me know and I’ll be happy to put my 70 year old eyes on the car. Billy.

If she can’t purr and rumble like that GTO, I’d say she has to go. ;-)

Heck maggy, no reason for you not to have your cake and eat it too! It’s only money. I’ve yet to see a hearse with luggage racks.

The way this economy is going the only thing that we are going to have to enjoy is our flag, our family and our toys and our gold coins to fondle. Oh yeah, don’t forget our guns.

Yup it’s only paper with green ink that’s becoming more devalued by the day….and I won’t get into politics here but you know what I mean and what and who is causing it..I actually have a guy coming to look at my car in the next few weeks from out of state and I haven’t even advertised it yet.It was thru word of mouth at a car show. Bad timing on this one for me …sigh. But they’ll be more.

It’s very nice. I’m surprised if it’s not thru the moon when the bidding’s over. out of the reach for most I’m afraid.

    Very beautiful.

Almost the same as the poster I got from Pontiac in 68 getting ready to do a Michigan turn on Woodward.

Ah, yes. The Michigan left turn. Seems a little goofy to people at first but it works. Fewer people crossing in front of you.

Nice appearing 68, but the photo “enhancements” by the seller could be masking defects. The only unmodified photo on ebay is of the bottom of the car. Very difficult to determine what you are looking at. This may be a very nice car, but the photo manipulations are to me are like taking a photo of a wet car. No PHS either…

The seller really knows how to take beautiful photos. It goes to show what great photography will do for value.
