There’s no denying that Mopar made a lot of Jeeps. Heck, even the special edition models like the Renegade were hardly in short supply when new, and you don’t have to look far to find one now. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as enthusiasts keep the remaining examples in fine shape, and there are plenty more still being used like every day beaters in climates where road salt isn’t warranted. This 1986 Jeep CJ7 Renegade listed here on eBay is an impressive survivor, used primarily for being towed behind an RV and sporting a very rare 4EB high back Denim Garnet Red interior.
Now, the mileage on this truck sure seems higher than the impressive condition on display would otherwise suggest, especially since it’s mostly original paint. In fact, just the nose panel has been repainted, which reflects the fact that it was towed behind a motorhome for most of its life to this point. The seller believes that the mileage is actually far less than the 144,000 shown on the odometer due to it being flat-towed, but that’s above my pay grade as far as figuring out how that all computes. Regardless, vehicles towed behind RVs generally leave easy lives, aside from the fact that they eat rocks and gravel for six months of the year.
Now, the interior is rarely more eye-catching than the Renegade’s wild decal scheme, but in this case, the first owner opted for an interior color that is truly a rare find. Crimson, cardinal, maroon – whatever you want to call it – is not exactly a common shade on Jeeps of any generation. It’s stunning, and it goes down to the carpets as well, giving this Jeep something most examples never have: a luxurious interior. OK, luxurious is a subjective term, but it’s way nicer than most Jeeps of this vintage, especially unrestored examples with upholstery that’s been left exposed to the sun courtesy of a soft top that was rarely erected.
The Jeep is equipped with the venerable 4.2L six-cylinder engine, that is known for its extreme durability, a quality that is only enhanced when it is either has low mileage or has been used quite gingerly like this one supposedly was. The seller notes that as a late production 1986 CJ7, it’s equipped with the desirable Dana 44 rear end. The asking price is $27,900 with the option to submit a best offer, and while that is a chunk of change for a Jeep, the rare color scheme and impressive survivor-grade condition could add up to a higher value than most CJ7s of this vintage.
Mopar didn’t build any Jeeps until after 1987. Pretty sure you meant AMC.
Agreed & personally, I’d rather have an AMC Jeep over the Chrysler.
I’m pretty sure part of what made me fall in love with my ex wife when I was 21 is that she drove one of these, which was a v cool car for a 20 yr old blonde gf in Florida.
Again with those glitzy sayingss, “It’s pig with lipstick on” folks. During my “JeepQuest”, there was a “Renegade” very similar to this on FB, for MONTHS. Fact is, I bet it’s still there. Naturally, it didn’t look like this, but it was rust free, it was listed at $4500 for a long time, then the “price slashing”, and was reduced to $2500, so naturally, 10 times that amount seems pretty unrealistic, and no bids might bolster that claim. Oh it sure looks nice, but the new buyer will soon get to know their auto parts professional by their 1st name. ( the women clerks are always high strung and crabby)There’s no underside pics, the part of a CJ that takes the most abuse and lots to repair, trust me. It’s a nice CJ, don’t get me wrong, but they went with the YJ and beyond for a reason, in unskilled hands, these can be the kiss of death. We lose one( or more) every year in the Rockies and it, like motorcycle/hiking deaths are always big news.
I haven’t seen a rust free CJ-7 that hasn’t been lifted or otherwise ruined for less than $10k for several years, so I must not be looking in the right places.
Congrats on slipping that idiotic sexist insult into the middle of a car rant.
Good grief.
Sorry, too bad you don’t want to hear it, but the female clerk at a certain O’Reilly’s YELLED AT ME, because I didn’t understand her. Another at AutoZone, couldn’t understand I wanted a front track bar for a ’91 YJ that wasn’t lifted, she threw up her arms and another clerk, a man, had to help me. Don’t be so thinned skinned. There’s bigger sexist problems than that statement.
Wait. You’re calling me “thin skinned?”
You’re the dude who made a generalized statement about ALL women who work at parts stores.Based on your experience with one person, one time.
So yeah, you slipped an idiotic (and unrelated) sexist insult into a car rant.
LOL. Talk about being thin skinned. Do yourself a favor, and check the mirror.
Ace, you’re the end result of the days when truth is sacrificed for political correctness. Your jab hints at being effeminate.
Well Howard, sorry if where your from, the woman “clerks”are always high strung, and crabby, that’s not been my experience here in Ohio, and I’m sure you’ll get other comments, for your opinions, but enough said from me,jeeps have a cult following, and typically are almost always grossly overpriced.
How ironic since this coming weekend in Butler,Pennsylvania is the Bantom Jeep festival There will be lots of Jeep’s of all years and kinds. Butler,Pennsylvania is the Birthplace of the Jeep in case some did not know
Lots of Jeeps will be at the Bantam event in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Stating that the high mileage reading due to towing is probably not accurate. I’m real sure that the odometer would not have clicked up so many miles being towed. I may be wrong, but I’m thinking the drive shafts would have been disconnected for any prolonged towing to prevent transmission and transfer case damage. My 2¢ worth, and I may be wrong….but I don’t think so.
Many of these are towed great distances behind motorhomes, with only the transfer case in N. It really doesn’t hurt anything in the motor, as it may still have low operating hours, but the driveline does take a beating. My ex-gf’s boss, had a motorhome that he pulled a Jeep behind, because it fit the package image. He never slept in the motorhome, nor drove the Jeep. It was just the image he was after. Towing a vehicle behind a motorhome is a major PITA. I watched one guy left Walmart with a motorhome pulling a Jeep, he had to stop due to a major steer wobble. Some put FWD cars on dollies, another PITA, or like a person I know, who spent $7,000 bucks on a special transmission disconnect gizmo on his minivan, so it could be towed, that also applied the brakes. I LMAO, a simple lockout on the front heels would work too. I swear, these vultures can sell air conditioners to the eskimoes.
Considering the crazy prices on an old Bronco, Jeep is the way to go to do the same thing.
They Are Asking $17,800 More Than My 1985 CJ7 Cost Brand New The Only Thing Is Mine Was Automatic Had A Hard Top With A Sun Roof and No Radio With A Stripe Package and It Came With The 4.2 6 Cyl. I Put In A Radio In Later Myself
Not original valve cover.
I have two Jeep Wranglers. Yes call me a masochist. First one is a 1987 with a AMC on the keys. Second one is 1988 with Jeep logo by Chrysler on the keys. They are the same color torch red. And I call them – wait for it … twin Jeeps! Paid 3700 for the 87 paid 5500 for the 88 2 years ago both look better than this one
Hi Michael, they are called YJ’s (’87-’95) then the TJ replaced the YJ in ’96, and, JK, and JL. Our YJ’s are considered “Commie Jeeps”, because, they have square headlights, something purists don’t like, and went back to round in ’96. I happen to like the square headlights, but while the 4 cylinder is adequate for my use, a 6 is much better, and will probably switch to a 6 once the 4 cylinder pukes, if ever. I’ve seen 4 cylinders with 200K on them. By the way, I removed that aluminum grill cover, because it hid the “7 slot grill” Jeep has become famous for. Yeah, I know, I’m nuts,,,
And yes I’m aware this is a c j and mine are designated Cy or whatever but I also had a 76 Levi’s Edition old Jeep and a guarantee of these ride better! But we can all agree on one thing that six-cylinder engine is the best one offered! My 87 has a hundred 144,000 on it my 88 has 84 they both run the same
