This 1976 Toyota Land Cruiser project is described as being very close to daily driver levels of reliability, thanks to a respectable list of improvements made by the seller. He notes that few Land Cruisers are left in this happy middle ground of being used in their current roughneck condition or serving as the basis of a reasonable restoration. Which way you you go? Find the Land Cruiser here on craigslist for $6,500 near Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The seller notes that one of the most attractive features of this Toyota is its largely rust-free condition. There is a spot of rot-through on the driver’s floor, but the rest of the structure – frame, floors, and passenger foot well – all just show traces of surface rust and no actual rot-through. The Land Cruiser has been stored inside for 30 years and needs the usual assortment of seals and hoses, but the body is sound.
The interior is in need of restoration if you’re chasing perfection, as the seller notes the seat upholstery has perished and the door panels need replacement. The headliner should also be replaced and the seller notes that the seat cushions are shot. Still, the original dash looks great with all the factory controls still in place, and I see no obvious flaws with the Land Cruiser’s glass or dash pad.
Mechanically, there are some nice upgrades awaiting the next owner, including Man-A-Fre six-into-one headers and de-smogged 1974 intake manifold. The Land Cruiser also benefits from a new clutch master, slave, and new hydraulic lines. The seller promises this could be a daily driver with minimal sorting, noting just some small fixes (shocks and horn among them), making this FJ an appealing winter project.
Nice find and not a bad price!!!
I’m sure every rubber bit underneath is wrecked. Shocks. All kinds of nickle-and-dime items to make it really reliable. I’d drop a new interior in it, detail the under hood, rebuild the suspension and detail. Leave the body alone and spray some matte clear on it.
Nice find, reasonable price.
