The El Camino was Chevrolet’s version of a “Ute” (utility coupe) and often competed with Ford’s Ranchero. After a three-year absence, the El Camino returned on the new Chevelle mid-size platform (1964) and held that position through 1987. This barn find El Camino from 1976 uses the Colonnade design of 1973-77 and is in rough shape but could be saved. Located in Marysville, California, this project or parts car is available here on craigslist for $4,500.
Chevy’s El Camino typically outsold the Ranchero, and 1976 was no exception. More than 50,000 of them were produced, including the GMC badge-engineered Sprint. Most El Caminos of that era likely came with a 350 cubic inch V8, and the seller’s truck is no exception, with a TH-350 automatic transmission. We’re told this pickup was sitting for many years, and we assume the seller rescued it, cleaned it up, and replaced a missing front fender.
We don’t know why this Chevy was parked in a barn and left behind, but the seller was able to get it to fire up by pouring some fuel into the carburetor. The transmission is sitting in the bed (good?), and one photo shows the lack of a driveshaft, so this machine won’t be a driver right away. We’re told this El Camino was used as a parts car for a time, so some missing parts may be a part of the problem.
Rust is said to be held to a minimum, and there is some sheet metal damage in the right rear. Someone had the foresight to put the car in non-op status with the California DMV, so back fees may not be applicable. The seller does not wish to part out the truck but will reduce the price by $1,000 if you’re willing to take it without the 350, tranny, and wheels.
Too expensive for either a parts car or project. Looks like it will need everything.
