Restored Toronado: 1991 Oldsmobile Trofeo

Is there a new (2025) two-door luxury coupe made by an American car company? I can’t think of one. The last two-door Cadillac was the 2019 ATS and CTS, and 2019 was six years ago already, pre-covid, pre-everything, it seems like. This beautiful 1991 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo was the ultimate in luxury two-door cars, and it’s listed here on eBay in Coventry, Rhode Island, and the current bid price is $5,100, but the reserve hasn’t been met.

By this time, the ultimate Toronado wasn’t known as a Toronado; it was just called the Oldsmobile Trofeo. Kinda like the Dodge Ram being a Ram, sort of, except the new Ram probably has several times the luxury of what was once the ultimate luxury Toronado. Not to mention, gets better MPG, is faster, quieter, etc. That being said, make mine a Trofeo.

Olds offered this special model of their fourth and last generation of the Toronado (made from 1986 through 1992) from the middle of 1987, and it was pretty stylish for the time, and still is. This is one of the nicest ones I’ve seen, and there’s a reason for that: the seller says it’s been “restored”, which I think may mean it’s been repainted, as the leather seats show more wrinkles than even I have. Check the vehicle history report on the eBay link; it shows that this car was “totalled”, which the seller says was a value-rated total, not a vehicle total. I had that happen with my, oddly also a 1991 model, Dodge Spirit, when someone barreled out into the street at night from a driveway in 1997, and I ran into them.

The black leather looks great, but I’m not sure if anything on the interior was restored, other than the often-troublesome digital instrument cluster. That’s good news that it’s working as it should. The back seat appears to have actually housed passengers, despite the calisthenics required to get back there. The seller says there’s a new AC compressor and conversion to R-134a, and it blows cold.

This is a composite from a screenshot from the vertical video that the seller included; they didn’t include any engine photos, which is a little strange since they showed almost every other area. This is a Buick-sourced 3.8-liter OHV V6 with 170 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. It’s sent through a four-speed automatic to the front wheels, in Toronado fashion, and they say it runs great and everything works as it should. Any thoughts on this Trofeo?

This is a very nice clean Toronado. I didn’t think much of them when they first came out, in my head they should have been larger, like all the previous generations. But now, its grown a lot on me. Nice lines. I used to think they were related closely to the Calais, but actually learned on here they arent. And now I see it, they are bigger. Kind of like a grown up mature luxurious version of a Calais. I don’t think there’s many im mint condition left out there. This one has aged very well. Its definitely been very well taken care of.

Had the same notions as you, back in the day, and the style has also grown on me. I’m especially fond of the wheels on these, but the whole look is pretty nice. Has that ultra-durable drivetrain as well, would make a fine daily driver.

When they came out I like the style of them. The seats are very comfortable and it be cool to drive them on a long trip. With 65000 miles I would not mine owning this one. Not crazy about the color. I just wish Olds drop a Supercharger on it. It would be fun to drive everyday. I notice something is up with the driving lamps under the front bumper. With them on wrong color. They are not clear. Anyway I guess they are looking north of $10,000.00. I wish them good luck.๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Concerning the front lamps, it looks to me like it could be the lighting as to where the car is parked. The dusk shot straight on they look pretty much the same to me.

I’m on my second repairable with my ’09 Lucerne. Had a ’11 Lucerne before that, both bought from the same repairable shop. Haven’t had any issues repair-wise with either one. But this one’s too far away from me, even though the dash has been fixed which, as Scotty pointed out, is always a good thing on these early screens.

Other than the salvage issue, I like the car & the colors in & out. Rims are particularly nice, seeming to be free from curb rash. Also like the remote cd player & the 5-band eq. radio. Nice looking car.

The Auto Check in the listing shows it was a total loss and that it suffered pretty severe damage in an accident. So I think “restorered” here means they fixed a totaled car.

I personally would probably avoid it for that reason. But this doesn’t bother some people.

Salvage auction pictures posted by rmward don’t show any major damage.

The upper radiator hose appears to be original. Clamps are the clue, but what is truly unnerving is the rust color at upper radiator clamp. Too late to flush it now. Head gaskets are probably weak.

The bidding has reached $5700 now. I went to the eBay site. Two things certainly got my attention. The vehicle has been a major accident and thereโ€™s title issues. Maybe I read this wrong? Just go to the site and look for yourself.

with a repaint it technically is not a survivor but still a nice toro. these were not great sellers when i was at the dealer only sold a couple per model year. 3800 is good motor though. i think the reserve is over 10k if were to guess but i am not sure the markets there for that number right now

Low miles and a 3800. It could make someone a reliable car, but I’m like the majority here: with that history, I’m looking elsewhere.

Pull the motor and mount it in the bed of an old Chevy swb truck!

Great aux gages – with numbers on them.
Looks almost like a concept car. Buick or Chevy should sell something like this today.
