Riverside Red Revival: 1964 Chevrolet Corvette

Changes were few to Chevrolet’s hot sports car, the Corvette, in 1964 after a complete redesign the year before. Its popularity continued to grow and 1964 would be the car’s best sales year (to date). This Riverside Red convertible has received a more modern V8 and transmission, so it could be considered a restomod though the seller prefers to call it “nicely done repairs”. Located in Loxahatchee, Florida, this sharp-looking ‘Vette is available here on eBay where the latest ante is up to $37,752.

The big news at Chevy in 1964 was the addition of the mid-size Chevelle. So, the rest of the lineup only received mild updates, with the Corvette being mostly the same as it was in 1963 (though the split-window glass in the coupe was gone, replaced by a solid glass rear window). Production numbers reached more than 22,200 units with nearly two-thirds being convertibles like the seller’s car. The 327 cubic inch V8 that output 300 hp was standard fare in the Corvette and was ordered by a wide margin of buyers.

The seller or previous orders have changed the mechanicals of the sports car quite a bit, with a 350 crate motor being under the hood now along with a 5-speed manual transmission. Add to that a replacement radiator and gas tank, air conditioning kit, and disc brakes and this Chevy has left some of 1964 in the rearview mirror. We’re told the car runs and drives nicely and there are no rattles after nearly 60 years.

The 923 paint was redone in 2006 and it’s starting to show its age, though the photos are kind. Present are the requisite chips and scratches you would expect but no damage to the fiberglass body. We don’t know the mileage of the Chevy or how long the present owner has had it, but the photos show other interesting vehicles in a swamp-like Florida environment where humidity isn’t always kind to automobiles.

Great car even with the hefty prices these cars are going for. Red does kind of fit the Corvettes in my eyes.

I am sure after all the experts weigh in there will be many negatives about this car. So I will say now it is perfect for me. It is exactly what I would like and I would drive it and relive my youth. I graduated from High School in 1961 and through my college years many of my friends had Corvette’s very similar to this one and they were buying them for less than 2 K.

I’m sure this little gem runs and drives well. But as a bit of a purist, I would pass on this one.

Negative camber and independent suspension go together. Does wonders for getting around corners fast without losing the rear end.

I really wanted one of these in 1964.

    I still do.

I’d have the driver’s seat reupholstered – someday. and, I’d like to know where its tailpipes went.

Other than the driver’s seat, its perfect.

Where it’s tailpipes went? Replaced with side mounted exhaust. They were available until 1965, but on this car, with the numerous non-original parts, it’s not an issue at all to me, I would have done the same thing. I would also replace the lower rear valance to eliminate the original exits. Not the best photo’s, but the kind of ‘vette I would enjoy, something you can drive without the fear of getting dirt or a chip on it. “Appears” to be a decent car!
