Rolls Well: 1949 Dodge Pilothouse Truck

1949 Dodge Truck

It appears this old truck listed on craigslist may have found it’s second life as a display piece in St. Joseph, Missouri. The asking price is a very reasonable $1,300 and even includes a factory bed. This is the more desirable “Pilot House” model. It looks original and complete. The seller rescued this truck from a barn in Kansas after sitting for years and says he doesn’t know if the engine is free and and assumes it’s not.

right

The seller says there is little rust and this could be true. The truck looks pretty solid. There’s a lot of surface rust, or patina but no visible daylight. A look underneath might tell a different story. If the original bed was replaced with this flatbed early on, it might be in good shape.

engine

The engine is all there except for the plug wires, even the air cleaner. The inside looks untouched except by the rodents making themselves comfortable. Wouldn’t it be great to get this running and driving. When neighbors and friends ask to borrow your nice pickup, you could happily lend them this. For those who name their vehicles, this old Dodge has enough character to star in a “Cars” movie? Others would want to add modern suspension, better brakes and a modern engine, perhaps mount the cab on a modern truck chassis. For the price, this cab and the remains of a crumpled up pickup could make an expensive project.

This would be a nice project I’ve gone to a few shows mostly ford and chevrolet trucks… I can count the dodge trucks (pre 1970) on both hands that I’ve seen at car shows…

Don’t want to sound ignorant but what determines this truck as a Pilothouse ???

I believe it’s the fact that it has 5 windows rather than 3.

I’m guessing the 3 rear windows earn it that designation.

I thought that might be the reason but was unsure so as a good student would I asked and I appreciate your response.

I LOVE that this literally IS yard art LOL.

One of the ‘ones that got away’ was a Pilot House. I’m a big fan.

This would be a great restoration project. Relatively complete and easy to work on. And you wouldn’t have five others like it show up at the car show. I like it; definitely worth more than yard art…
