Running Project: 1972 Buick Skylark

From its transformation into a mid-size car in 1964, the Buick Skylark was the GM division’s top-line intermediate through 1972 (except for the Gran Sport). The styling of the 1968-69 models got a little wild, but was toned down in 1970-72. This 1972 edition looks okay, though it needs paint and some sheet metal work. Located with a dealer in Kingston, Wisconsin, this Buick is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $10,800.

Changes to the ’72 Skylark were few compared to the ’71, perhaps because the planned Colonnade redesign had been pushed back a year. Two versions of the Skylark were offered in regular and Custom trim. The seller’s car appears to be an example of the former, which saw nearly 85,000 Sport Coupes leave the assembly line in 1972. A 350 cubic inch V8 came as standard far,e and we assume that’s what’s in the seller’s car along with a TH-350 automatic transmission. Are either of them original? We don’t know.

While we’re told this car runs, drives, and stops as it should, the worrisome part (or not) is that a salvage title is in place due to an insurance claim. Why was that? It doesn’t look wrecked, so was it stolen and then recovered? States differ on how titles are handled, so you may want to check with your DMV if you’re outside of Wisconsin. The seller says this is a clean Western car, so does that mean California and the like?

You’re going to need a new trunk pan and do some work on one of the rear quarter panels before applying fresh paint. The interior seems to be in fine shape, though fairly mundane, hence the thought that this car is not a Custom. If you’re in the market for a 1970-72 Skylark as a project, how does this one work for you? BTW, thanks to “Lothar… of the Hill People” for the continuing tips!

When I was in High School in the mid 80’s, the lot was littered with cars just like this Skylark. Maybe got it from Grandma and Grandpa as a first car, or found it on someones front lawn for $1400. A little Bondo a little primer in spots. Got the Craigers, Huge plans to one day get it painted and fixed up. Some people did, some got about this far and ran out of steam. This one definitely looks like it has good bones and would look great finished up.

A Custom would have wood grain on the door panels, Assuming they are original.

“The styling of the 1968-69 models got a little wild,” That must be the reason I like them so much!

There are certainly a LOT of questions to be answered on this one! $10800 seems like alot given that.

This is the same color as the 70 model I bought in 78 for $250, replaced the exhaust, valve cover gaskets, and tire, then proceeded to get totalled by an LTD broadsiding me 2 months later. Wouldn’t mind having another one… for more than 2 months lol.

Pricey for its condition, needs trunk floor, passenger quarter panel, paint the AC compressor is missing. There is a good chance there is more rust than mentioned. This might be a good project, but not for the asking price.
