Runs And Drives: 1965 Pontiac LeMans

This 1965 Pontiac LeMans needs some work, but the seller states that it could either be a project car or with a bit of work it could serve as a daily driver. You will find it listed for sale here on eBay. It is located in El Paso, Texas, and is being offered for sale with a clear title. The seller has set a BIN price of $4,800, but the option is there to make an offer.

There’s no doubt that there’s some work to do on this Pontiac, but the seller might not be far off the mark when he talks about getting it to the stage where it could be used as a daily driver. The rust that you see in the trunk floor is the worst of it in the car. There is also some in the front floors, but it looks like it could be repaired without replacing the floor pans. There is only some minor rust in the lower quarters, plus some in the corners of the doors and the lower edges of the front fenders. The rockers both look solid, and the frame also looks really good. Most of the glass is good, although it appears that the windshield has a crack from top-to-bottom on the driver’s side.

If you were looking at this car as a daily driver, then the interior could be used as it is. The dash itself doesn’t look to have been modified, and the original radio is still in place. The dash pad and wheel are both cracked, but the carpet looks like it might come up okay with a clean. The seats are not too bad, except for the driver’s, which has a decent tear on the side. The door trims and other plastic trim don’t look bad at all. Therefore, restoration of the interior doesn’t look like a particularly big job.

This LeMans is powered by a 326ci V8 backed by a 2-speed automatic transmission. The seller states that the car runs nicely and shifts smoothly. The car is currently running using a gas can, so it sounds like there might be some work to do with the gas tank and lines. The car is also fitted with factory air conditioning, although the lack of a belt is a fair indication that it doesn’t work at present.

I was in two minds about this car when I looked at it. A good example won’t leave you any change out of $25,000, and from there prices can range up to around $40,000. Instead of focusing on that, I went and looked at a few project cars that are currently on the market. I found two examples in about the same physical condition as this one, or possibly a bit worse. One was a roller, and the asking price on that was $5,500. The other had an engine and transmission, but both need a rebuild, and the owner wants $7,000 for that one. At the asking price, this appears to be a competitively priced project car.

This looks to be a decent project for a Pontiac guy and since it’s a Lemans I would make it nice enough to just daily drive it. The 326 was a good motor and the 2 barrel carb will get you decent mileage. If closer I would offer 4K and hopefully take it home. I would take this over that Olds Gutless 442 in Beloit, Illinois.

I’ve always liked the Tempest and LeMans. This may be a good project car for someone, but, not for me. It still needs a lot of work
