S-Code Roller: 1967 Ford Mustang Project

Change was coming for the popular Ford Mustang in 1967. After selling 1.3 million units in less than three years, the car would have its first real competition that year. And, the top engine in 1966 was a 289 cubic inch V8, so Ford restyled the “pony car” in ’67 and enlarged the engine compartment to accommodate a big-block V8. This Mustang is one of those that came with a 320 hp 390 V8 in 1967, though that engine has flown the coop and the rest of the Ford lives in a shabby barn.

Considering that the Chevy Camaro and others joined the field in 1967, Ford still managed to sell 472,000 Mustangs – far ahead of Chevrolet, Pontiac, Mercury, and Plymouth combined. We don’t know how many ‘Stangs had the S-Code 390, supposedly including this one. As part of the deal, the seller has another 390 motor that can go with the sale (for the seller to install; it’s a roller now).

According to the seller, this Mustang was built in San Jose, California, but has called this barn in New York home for some time now. The 390 was paired with an automatic transmission which is still in place (but who knows what it may need). Because the windows were left open, Mother Nature invaded the interior, and the floors are now rusty (must have gotten wet). We’re told the rest of the car’s infrastructure is solid.

Besides being an S-code Mustang, the seller also indicates it’s a GT but doesn’t elaborate further. The odometer quit working at 50,000 miles (or 150,000). This project looks like an uphill climb and there are nicer Mustangs out there (but for more money). Located in Riga, New York, this Ford is available here on craigslist for $6,000.     Nope , $6k for that and its in New York? No thanks as we have seen here if you just shop around and be Patient you can find better for the money.

    The words, “no rust” obviously have no meaning any more in regard to classic cars.

    If he wants the car to guard the barn, the price will stay as it is.

    I’m a skeptic, but it’s a factory 390 Mustang and I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for them. If you live nearby and are looking for a Ford project it’s worth a look. Its hard to tell how rusty it really is and it’s been in the market long enough that the owner might be willing to deal. There is a reason why several sellers their finds featured on this site repeatedly, it’s because they show up when others don’t.

    Me and nearly every friend I have wound up buying cars because they were the only ones to make the time to look at a car. Swapmeets are becoming that way also, good stuff that used to sell instantly at 6:00am is now often not sold until 9:30 or 10:00 because nobody wants to get out of bed.

    I’ll keep an eye on this one just to see if anyone forks out that much dough for a fairly awful Rustang. One of my neighbors has one by the side of their barn that is remarkably similar to this. If this one flies for $6 G’s, I’ll give my neighbor $1,000 for his and flip it.

    Better make that the replacement 390 is an S code/GT style. Heads, intake, valve covers, and exhaust manifolds are different, to allow the big FE to be shoe-horned in.

      You should schedule an appointment with your eye doctor. This car is a Mustang and just about every part of this car is reproduced. The hardest part might be finding a “correct” 390 engine, and even that should not be that hard. This car looks very restorable to me. Now depending upon how someone does the restoration they still might be under water financially, but that is another story.
