Same Family 42 Years: 1969 Ford Mustang Convertible

After five years in production and a slew of new competitors, the Ford Mustang was still king of the pony cars. 1969 model year production approached 300,000 units, easily 20 percent higher than its closest imitator, the Chevy Camaro. The styling had been updated again, but the car still had proportions similar to the original in 1965. This convertible has been owned by the family since 1980 but has been in storage since 2011. It will need a little tinkering to get back on the road but looks like a solid survivor. Located in Salem, Massachusetts, the seller is firm on the price of $20,000 here on craigslist. Another barn find (aka garage find) tip from T.J.!

There were two versions of the Mustang convertible in 1969, body code 76A and 76B. The only thing that differentiated them was the level of trim, the 76B being the “luxury” version. A total of 14,746 copies were produced. A few years earlier, that would have meant the car came with the “pony” interior which included a lot more padding. It’s hard to tell from the dark interior photo which the seller’s car is, but it seems to be in presentable condition.

There’s no reason to think the overall car hasn’t held up over the years. There is no evidence of rust or damage from the photos provided, but since the car doesn’t move due to a lack of a battery, the only pictures are from inside the garage where it has lived for more than a decade. The Meadowlark Yellow paint shines nicely and the black convertible top looks equally good. From sitting so long, the Ford will need a new set of tires.

Under the hood resides a 302 cubic inch V8 with an automatic transmission. It looks as though the car was recently treated to a new radiator and distributor cap, but the seller doesn’t mention this. We’re told it was running great when parked, but now bad gas (and a battery) keeps it from performing. Supposedly a flush of the fuel system and a cleaning of the carburetor will rectify those matters. While the seller doesn’t indicate if it’s needed, a spare rebuilt transmission will come with the deal.

That’s definitely the base interior other than the optional console. The upgraded interior would have the lovely genuine faux wood veneer-like panelling.I kind of like the base interior, peeling genuine faux wood veneer-like panelling is prone to peeling in my overly humid neck of the woods.
