In the 1960s, Chevrolet, Ford, and Plymouth generally competed with one another model for model. Case in point was the Impala Super Sport. Ford’s equivalent was the Galaxie 500/XL, and Plymouth’s wannabe was the Sport Fury. The latter car was offered in 1959 and again from 1962 to 1971. The seller’s 1968 edition has been off the road for at least 35 years, but has moved from one storage location to another during that time. Not running and in need of a full restoration, this sporty full-size car is located in Clyde, Texas, and is available here on eBay, where only one bid of $3,800 has been placed. Another fading tip from Mitchell G.!

The Sport Fury began as a special edition of the Fury in 1959, but did not return for either 1960 or 1961. Perhaps due to the Impala SS becoming a major factor in the Chevy portfolio in 1962, the Sport Fury was back again. I don’t recall a lot of advertising for it ever, and the car was usually in the third sales spot behind the Impala SS and Galaxie 500/XL (which stood for “Extra Lively”). In 1968, only 6,642 Sport Fury 2-door hardtops were built, a retread of the 1967 model except for the addition of side marker lights.

As the story goes, this Plymouth has been passed along through the same family since 1980. That’s when the seller’s brother bought it off the original owner. He drove it for about 10 years and then parked it in their uncle’s garage for eight years (1998). From then until 2022, it took up residence in Dad’s covered shop. Going forward, it’s lived under the seller’s carport and hasn’t been started since the last decade of the 20th Century.

The VIN decodes this Mopar as having a 383 cubic inch V8 with a 4-barrel. A TorqueFlite automatic transmission should also be in play. The blue paint is well past its prime, and there is a touch of rust here and there, but it doesn’t sound too troublesome. The interior, of course, is rather dirty, and the headliner looks to be falling down. An aftermarket air conditioner is hanging under the dashboard, and the seller says his brother installed an 8-track tape player back in the day (gadzooks!). Are you inspired to resurrect this once noble Mopar?
