Same Owner 21 Years: 1972 Pontiac LeMans Sport

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The LeMans Sport was introduced in 1970, something of a cross between the standard LeMans and the muscular GTO. Perhaps that was to appease profit-oriented insurance companies who had become aware of what the GTO was (as a separate series between 1966 and 1971). The seller’s car, a 1972 LeMans Sport, looks a bit like a GTO with Sundance Orange paint, Rally wheels, and a bucket seat interior. A good running car in Loveland, Colorado, the vehicle does need cosmetic attention. This “Poncho” is available here on eBay, where $4,400 is the current bid with a reserve set north of there.

This Pontiac has been a part of the seller’s family since 2004. When he/she bought it, the then-owner said it was a barn find that was given new paint. But that work wasn’t prepared well, and the car shows a lot of little flaws when you get up close. So, it’s likely the buyer will want to have it redone again, but correctly this time. The mileage is said to be 64,000, thought to be correct, but not documented. A lot more LeMans Sports were sold in 1972 than GTOs.

The seller ran the car through PHS (Pontiac Historical Society), and it jives numbers-wise with a 350 cubic inch V8 (2-barrel), automatic transmission, and (oddly) full drum brakes (of which the rears don’t currently work as they should). The radiator, custom dual exhaust, and tires are new or newer. We’re told the LeMans runs great and has gone on many long rides with no issues.

Besides fixing some Midwest rust and giving the Pontiac a new finish, the buyer will want to patch one of the seats, replace the dash pad, get the factory A/C to work again, and decide if you need tunes to cruise by (no stereo). With no more time to devote to the machine, the seller hopes it goes to a new home and receives the proper care.

4 wheel drum brakes were still pretty common for these in 1972. I owned a base model with manual brakes and a friend of mine had a fancier model with power drums, like this one. I too, thought it was pretty odd at the time.

The ad is written by an actual long time owner rather than someone looking for a quick flip. I hope it goes to a good home.
