Same Owner 40 Years: 1967 Ford Fairlane 500

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In 1962, Ford saw a market need for a product between their full-size models and the relatively new compact Falcon. So, they repositioned the Fairlane nameplate and dubbed it an intermediate or mid-size. The seller has owned this 1967 edition of the Fairlane 500 for more than 40 years, and it’s in solid, unrestored condition with fairly low miles. Located in Ridge, New York, this nifty Club Coupe is available here on eBay where the current bid is $8,651 with an unmet reserve.

Chevrolet responded to the success of the smaller Fairlane in 1964 with their new Chevelle, which quickly took over the top sales spot. As #2, Ford would try harder and the Fairlane was redesigned in 1966, gaining stacked headlights like the senior cars. As such, the ‘67s were little changed and the Fairlane 500 remained top dog. Unlike the Chevelle Malibu, the 500 was available as a 2-door sedan like the seller’s which saw production of just 8,473 units that year, making it rare now.

This Ford is a two-owner automobile with the seller in charge for the past four decades. It is just 56,000 miles and is completely original in terms of paint, interior, and drivetrain. The latter is as basic as they come, with a 200 cubic-inch inline-6 (we think as there are no photos) paired with a “3-on-the-tree” manual transmission. The solid state of the machine can no doubt be credited with the time it has spent in the garage.

Over time, its factory steel wheels were replaced with fancier ones that could have been ordered when new, so they are period-correct. The seller may have accumulated too many adult toys as he/she needs to free up some space in the shop. This could be a neat auto to show off at Cars & Coffee because it looks so nice without having superpowers under the hood.

Actually, the top banana in the Fairlane line this year was the GT/GTA.

A time capsule. I can’t even imagine the kind of person that would enjoy driving this though, in line six and three on the tree?

I grew up on Ford Falcons with inline 6 cylinder engines and 3-on-the-tree transmissions. This Fairlane would feel like an old friend!

My first car, a ’67 Chevy truck, had an inline-6 and 3 on the tree. The beauty of that design is manifold, but primarily it’s the ease of working on it. I’ve had one other car with an inline-6 and loved it for the same reason. Plenty of torque and you can change the plugs in 5 minutes. I’d love this beauty.

My cousin bought a brand new ’67 Fairlane GT in this exact color. 289, 4 speed, a beautiful car. He waited until the factory warranty ran out. Then went crazy on the performance mods. That car would put the rear bumper on the pavement, at will. 8 year old me was mesmerized. Always wanted one after that. Unfortunately, I’m too strapped to go after this one. GLWTA

Very nice Fairlane. I bought a wrecked one–with a 289 in it. I spun the bearing in the 390 and blew a 428. When I put the 289 in it. I took as much abuse–if not more. Then it got stuck. now I,ll have to rebuild it–plus I have a few 390 ,s I can put in it. The 289 is alot easier to work on and easy on gas. Sure wished they would do without the ETHANOL CRAP. IT HAS RUINT ALOT OF GOOD MOTORS. This price on this Fairlane—is alot more reasonal–then any new car any day. Alot more car for your money.Easy to work on –easy on gas. Great mid size car.

To me, the folks who were in their teens or older in the 60’s and 70’s were in auto heaven. The designs, the colors, the power, how you build your ride, and the price adjusted for income will never come again. I tend to love the boxier designs and every manufacturer had a ride I would die for. This Fairlane, GT or GTA with the 289 is one of these. Beautiful ride!

Love the 2-door sedan. Reminiscent of the Club Coupe. Six-stick is fine with me. I can use the two lane.

I drove plenty of inline six cylinder three on the tree vehicles back when they were commonplace. I would enjoy driving and owning this Ford Fairlane. GLWTS.

I probably won’t be popular but this car is so nice and already a standard I’d want to drop a 351 with a 4 or 5 spd. a set of headers with dual exhaust and some nicer wheels and tires.

I would drop in a 390 and buckets and console due to the fact i would never sell it down the road….

I would love to drive this car just as it is. Like Larry says, it would feel like an old friend.

I’ll admit I don’t understand my grandkids’ video games they play on their ipads. To reverse the roles, I could take them to this car and ask them to explain how to get it to go down the road at highway speed.

6-banger & 3 on the tree? Harkens back to a simpler time. Would love to bomb around town with my love on Friday nights, grab the grands & go for ice cream.
