Same Owner 52 Years: 1971 Dodge Charger 500

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chrysler redesigned all of its mid-sized B-body cars in 1971. That included the Dodge Charger, which had a highly successful second-generation run from 1968 to 1970. The cars had an all-new look and sales more than doubled from 1970 (in part because the Coronet was no longer offered as a 2-door hardtop). The seller is the second owner of this Charger, which has a few cosmetic blemishes but looks solid overall. Located in Worcester, Massachusetts, this interesting Mopar is available here on eBay for $24,995 OBO. Once again, “Curvette” tosses a great tip our way!

In an interesting twist, 1971 B-body Dodges and Plymouths had separate styling and sheet metal for hardtops versus sedans and wagons. Cars like the Charger got treated to a longer hood, which had a lot of empty space forward of the radiator. The Charger 500 remained a separate model in 1971, accounting for 12% of production. This vehicle has a reported 75,000 miles and was held by its original owner until two years ago.

The VIN provided for this car says it was fitted with a 383 cubic inch V8 at the factory, but with a 2-barrel carburetor. We assume that the setup is still in place, including the TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The seller said it’s a good driver and would be perfect for weekend outings. The passenger compartment looks nice and clean and ready for takers. But the headliner and dash pad do need attention.

The body has a couple of small dents, but the paint seems okay given the limited selection of photos offered. And the Dodge will come with some spare parts, though the assortment is not identified. If you’re looking for an early ‘70s Charger to drive and enjoy for half the price of a second-gen edition, does this car float your boat?

Clean start for a nice hot rod…I wouldn’t feel guilty about day 2’ing this car and dropping a built 440, Dana 60, and a 4-speed in it. Needs to be about $10K. Unfortunately, $25K is not gonna happen in today’s market for a 383-2 car with an 8 1/4″ rear. It would have to be a mint, low-mileage car to pull that kind of coin.
