Semi-Survivor: 1972 Dodge Demon 318 V8

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chrysler Corp. had a lot of cool-sounding cars in the 1960s and 1970s. Like the Super Bee, Road Runner, Charger, and Duster. Oh, and let’s not forget the Dodge Demon, which was that division’s version of the Plymouth Duster, a nifty fastback. Due to the latter’s success, Dodge clambered for and got the Demon in 1971. After 1972, the car was rebranded Dart Sport because political correctness was alive even then. This 1972 Demon is said to be a semi-survivor that runs well with a 318 cubic inch V8. It can be found in Charlestown, Rhode Island, and is available here on craigslist for $22,000.

The Dodge Demon was essentially a Duster with a Dart front clip and revised taillights. And, it could be ordered with the same engines, starting with a Slant-Six, and finishing with the 340 cubic inch small-block V8. A common middle ground point was the 318 V8 with an automatic transmission, which is how the seller’s car was built. We’re told there are multiple copies of the car’s build sheet, but no details are offered as to options other than what we can see for ourselves, like the vinyl top and factory air conditioning.

For reasons unknown, the Demon never sold as well as the Duster (maybe it was the name?). Supposedly the clergy got up in Dodge’s face about that moniker and the car became a more mundane-sounding Dart Sport in 1973 (still selling in fewer numbers than the Duster). What we see here is a very nice car with no visible rust. The paint could be newer since we’re told a black stripe kit was ordered but never installed (up to the buyer to do so if he/she wishes).

Overall, we have a solid-running Dodge that’s likely the “semi-survivor” the seller describes it as. We wish there were more photos, especially of the interior as the seller seems to be a bit camera-shy (we only see the underside of the back seat). The seller indicates a willingness to trade (but for what?), so a lack of space is likely not prompting this Mopar’s sale. Could this Dodge be a devil of a deal for the right person?

For that kind of money I would expect interior shots.

For that kind of money, it should be a more desirable car.

I guess I’m too early. I thought for sure someone would have posted by now that they have to rip out the 318 and put in something bigger.

Not rip it out, necessarily, but bore it out, to a 340 displacement. The LA engine in these could be taken out to 360 cubic inches, simply by increasing the bore. Versions with up to 8.0L (488 c.i.d.) were possible and available from Chrysler (for truck duty only, I might add), using a stroker crank with a bore job.

Sigh. Thanks for not disappointing. SMH

slant 6 is plenty for that car. I had 1974 Dart Swinger with slant 6, plenty of power. Anything else would be too big

Agreed. I had (for a very short while) a 1974 Dodge Dart convertible that some wise soul shoehorned a police interceptor 440 into.
3 sets of rear tires in 3 months I decided I can’t afford this car. I was 17 and has not learned at all what a light foot was about.
