Shoe Box Find: 1950 Ford Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

According to the ad, this 1950 Ford Convertible is a one-owner car that’s been sitting since 1970. It can be found here on Facebook Marketplace with an asking price of $8,500. Located in Harding, NJ, unfortunately, there isn’t much information in the ad. Let’s take a look at this car and let us know what you think.

As you can see from this photograph, the car looks like it’s in very original condition. The ad does say it has 78,000 miles and has the original paperwork from the dealer. It will be interesting to see how the black paint and burgundy interior cleans up. Hopefully, the ripped top hasn’t caused the interior to rot too much. There’s no mention on the condition of the Flathead V8 and manual transmission either. Perhaps they aren’t seized? What do you think of this car? Would you be interested in the asking price? If not, what do you think is fair?

Another “expert” car salesman strikes again! Give the potential buyers some information and pictures and maybe someone will buy your over priced old car.

If the price suits your budget and you’ve got the time there’s no reason why this one can’t be made into something enjoyable.

Thanks, Bob, I was quite taken with that one myself. Wish it was parked on my driveway…

Same car. Yup. Same dang car. Must we go through this rigmarole again about the JC Whitney custom fins, rear spotlight (to illuminate the trailer this car pulled) ad nauseum? This is a repeat ad and obviously the seller isn’t even going to the trouble of giving us as many pictures as they did 3-4 weeks ago. Someone buy this dang car!

Kinda funny, the Morristown,NJ Craigslist ad from Feb.18th for this car is still posted(as a one-owner car with much more information and $8000.00),but now shown in a different building and town.Sold, moved to another location, crap thrown around it,and tires went flat again? I still like it and wouldn’t mind knowing if the engine still turns?

Harding is part of Morris County, and much of it has a Morristown mailing address. I was raised there. Wondering where this was hiding all my life! lol

Looks like the same resting spot, but agree about the additional crap….perhaps these are even earlier photos from when the car was first discovered. So, if I understand it, there is a $500 premium to the seller for relisting the car with fewer pictures and a better back story? LOL. Shaking my head.

Does the seller think that everyone is a fool. This puppy is rough and not worth anywhere near his asking price.

Two pictures and that’s it? Practically no description and unknown if the engine will even move? Really?? Obviously he wants you to come look at it and make an offer, but being that I’m interested but would have to travel from South FL to NJ to look at it, I am already incurring cost for something that I don’t even know if it has a grill and front bumper or the drivers side has been wiped out. My mom was saving up for one of these in coupe trim back when she was a carhop in the late 50’s. She then met my (deadbeat) father who borrowed that money from her and never paid her back, therefore never getting the car she wanted. Mom will be turning 80 this year. I would love to get this car and get it back on the road with mom behind the wheel. Insufficient info likely will prevent that from happening. Not likely to spend the money (100’s of dollars to fly and then get a rental car, then may have to arrange shipping of car) to look at a car with practically no info. ***Advice: If you want to sell something online, spend the time to list it to sell. Otherwise, it’s almost a waste of time to bother listing it. If you want someone to look at it, list it locally and that’s it. List it to sell it!

One more thing, the seller is listing the car as being in “Fair” condition. to be accurate, Fair Condition according to Hagerty is: Fair vehicles are daily drivers, with flaws visible to the naked eye. The chrome might have pitting or scratches, the windshield might be chipped. Paintwork is imperfect, and perhaps the body has a minor dent. Split seams or a cracked dash, where applicable, might be present. No major parts are missing, but the wheels could differ from the originals, or other non- stock additions might be present. A #4 vehicle can also be a deteriorated restoration. “Fair” is the one word that describes a #4 vehicle. This car, being stored since 1970, clearly would not be in “Fair” (driver) condition. A lot of work (and money for parts) would be required to just get it to driver condition.

When I was a kid all the hot rod guys called the sedan “shoe box” and the convertible was “flower pot”

Nice car looks pretty complete the rest is a pleasure trip back to the fifties. If the US Australian exchange rate wasn’t so bad I’d buy it even at the price.
