Shorty Van Trailer: 1965 Chevrolet Handi-Van

When it comes to using vehicles as promotional items for a business venture, it’s hard to go wrong with vans cut down to clown-car size. This van goes one step further in the promotional category, as it’s technically a trailer that can be pulled around to different swap meets and other ventures where such a crazy custom might draw a crowd. This chopped trailer is based on a 1965 Chevrolet Handi-Van, and as you can see, it’s a shadow of its former self. Unlike the shrunken VW Buses and other period vans that actually still run and drive (poorly), this custom “hippy van” here on eBay is all-trailer with a small living space inside. Bidding is at $1,925 with the reserve unmet.

I’ve always found the culture of the chopped van to be an interesting one. Is it purely for laughs that this is done? Any semblance of handling goes right out the window with one of these conversions, and while it’s hilarious to see an old VW Bus popping a wheelie, that’s about as much enjoyment as you’re going to get out of something with this short of a wheelbase. I applaud the seller for not trying to make this into an actual driving vehicle, as the trailer function seems way more practical and you still get all the mileage you would otherwise get out of using this thing as a prop or a marketing gimmick. There are all sorts of custom touches, too, that indicate the builder was thinking of the multitude of ways a rig like this could be used as a crowd-pleaser.

Inside, you’ll find side bench seats that fold up into a platform with enough space for a queen-size bed. There’s a small TV and an air conditioning unit that looks like it was removed from the seller’s living room. This, to me, is one of the better ideas I’ve seen involving a short wheelbase van conversion like this, as it does make for a decent sleeping space if you just need to catch some shut-eye on a long drive. This is assuming, of course, your trailer isn’t full of your wares either to be sold or that you picked up at the swap meet. The seller notes that the shortened van trailer conversion has approximately 5,000 miles on it and comes with a new set of tires.

The interior has other creature comforts as well, including a small in-dash radio/TV with a 110v to 12v converter, and a TV channel changer in the glovebox. There’s also an antenna in the cab above the windshield. The compact TV is functional, and the seller highlights the presence of nearly-new carpeting. The Chevy also comes with a weird “party fogger” system that is apparently rigged up to blow out fake exhaust fumes, a phenomenon I was not familiar with. Put simply, you already know whether you need something like this in your life, as there’s really no middle ground with owning a van that’s missing its engine and about four feet out of its midsection. What do you think – could you find a use for this custom Chevy?

Fake clown car. Just the kind of trailer a teen guy needs when dating.

Yes, it does say there’s enough room for a queen size bed.

Interesting toy I would gut it and make it so it has a working kitchen set up and fresh water storage , wonder what the current dry weight of it is.

I don’t know much about trailers, but that seems like a long wheelbase for such a short trailer. I’d be curious about turning, especially when reversing.

My wife called me a “Party Fogger” once. At least, I think that’s what she called me. Haven’t talked to her for some time now. She’s still cashing the checks though.

I had this van, but mine was a 64 GMC HandiVan. This one looks like a 64 not a 65 ChevyVan because the 65 has an extra grill slot on the bottom. Mine had a 194ci straight inline 6 with good low-end torque. Mine was primer red with a spoiler on the rear top which looked cool. I had nice Cooper Cobra tires and chrome wheels with spinners on it. Sold it to a guy who painted it black with a lot of pinstripes, changed the wheels, rhino lined the inside, and bagged it. This flat window vans are cool when done right.

really like the 1st gen van. Hada 108 WB (2nd gen). Not sure what motor but after my 1st 3, 4 cars (I restoed) an i6 seemed great (4 cyl all 50s/60s Italian B4 that). Like the behind axel motors. Use asa seat, wrk in the rain & best? don’t hafta deal w/a dash in the way no matter what. (wrk inside, then go outside, come back in, etc).
