Signed by Shelby: 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra is a heavily modified example of one of the most collectible of the Fox-body ‘Stangs, and while it has under 30,000 original miles, it’s not exactly a survivor. The Cobra is still extremely clean and presents as a low-mileage car should, but you can also tell it’s been upgraded and given some personal touches here and there. The smoked headlights aren’t my favorite upgrade but that’s an easy fix if you feel the same way I do; the Mustang is attracting lots of interest here on eBay where bidding has crested $44,000 with the reserve unmet.

Obviously, the Cobra needs little in the way of an introduction. It’s what I’d call nicely upgraded from the basic GT, as it wasn’t a significant boost in horsepower over the standard model. Still, anything SVT breathes on tends to be improved in many ways you can’t see, from the handling qualities to the upgraded hardware throughout. The F0x-body Cobra has been making more appearances on the auction circuit in the last few months than I’ve ever seen previously, and they’re pulling strong money at the moment. I’m truthfully a little surprised to see how active the bidding is on this car, considering it’s not a bone-stock virgin.

The listing breaks out the numerous upgrades under the hood, which seem nothing short of extensive. a Ford Racing long-block crate motor; forged steel crankshaft; forged pistons; hydraulic roller cam; Crower roller rockers; Weldon fuel pump; 80 lb. injectors; ceramic coated exhaust; Flowmaster three-chamber mufflers; aluminum driveshaft; steel flywheel; Moser 31-spline axles; and much more. The improvements also include chassis upgrades as well, with adjustable lower control arms, front coilovers, caster camber plates, and an Eibach front sway bar, with several other components listed.

Of course, the most impressive feature is the signed glovebox with Carroll Shelby’s name on it, which will make most muscle car freaks slightly weak in the knees. The value of the signature? I never know, as it really comes down to whether his John Hancock is something you’ll be showing off to your friends for as long as you own the car. In my opinion, the value is still tied up in the low mileage and the upgrades, and it seems clear there’s more than one bidder who likes the work that was done to this Cobra. What do you think – is it worth it to buy a modified collector car, or would you save your money for a bone-stock example?

Yeah, and Elvis once farted in my car. Big deal. Cars should be valued on being a car, nothing more. If it has a nice paint job, if it runs well, that is all that matters to me. I drive for just that. Not an investment and the people who push this crappy idea for a quick buck needed to be kicked in the…well, you know what I mean. Stop pricing true car enthusiasts out of the market.

Isn’t Carrol Shelby that guy that makes chili kits?

LOL. My parents had one of his chili kits in the pantry closet for years. I guess they never got around to using it.
It would probably be a collectors item now.

I recall a Shelby owning friend of mine commenting…It’s rarer if you have one he DIDN’T sign!

And you have to wonder if that’s a genuine Carroll Shelby signature. A lot of fakes out there. Just a thought

Back to the car…. We all know how the 1993 Cobras have skyrocketed in value over the past few years. The clean, low mileage examples now bring big big bucks. So I was thinking the same as Jeff: I thought this one, cleanly and extensively and tastefully modified but modified nonetheless, might not bring the big money. But here we are.

A fitting swan-song to the fox body mustang. Great cars these Cobras. Only thing tp make this example better would be that turquoise color paint. Reef blue?

Shelby signed a ton of cars for years, so to me his signature doesn’t add too much value. I was at Limerock years ago with a ’93 Cobra and a buddy’s ’68 Shelby GT500 and Carroll was there signing just about every car with a Shelby connection. And there were a LOT of various Shelbys and Cobras there that day. However, there are a finite number of cars that he signed and he’s not signing any more, so there’s that.

With all the signed cars out there, it must have been interesting to see the ‘Meet and Greet’ line for a Carroll Shelby autograph at car shows.

Years ago the Shelby convention was at Road America. I was a vendor across the lane from the lines waiting to buy autographs from him. I saw disappointed kids whose parents couldn’t afford autographs. That didn’t sit right with me.

I’m not a Ford guy but everything on this car appears to be tasteful, and very, very well done.
