UPDATE 10/06/2025: Some owners taste success when listing a classic, and some get bitten by non-paying winning bidders. It appears that the seller may have experienced the latter with this 1972 Dodge Charger Special Edition. Its previous listing indicated that it sold for $25,800, but it is back on the market only days later. No bids have been placed on the No Reserve auction that opened at $25,500, but the interest this beauty has generated in under a day suggests the situation could change at any time.
09/25/2026: The seller is the third owner of this 1972 Dodge Charger Special Edition, and it carries the hallmarks of a cherished classic. Undercoated by the first owner, it’s rust-free and makes a strong impression.
Dodge released its Third Generation Charger for the 1971 model year. The company abandoned the previous generation’s Coke-bottle styling in favor of the “fuselage” look. The appearance divided opinions then, and still does so today. This Charger Special Edition rolled off the line in 1972, finished in Bright Blue Metallic with a Black vinyl top. The seller confirms they are its third owner, and that it has led a sheltered life. The first owner had the car undercoated early, preventing significant rust problems. They restored it a few years ago, repairing minor penetrating rust with fresh steel from AMD. The results justified the effort, because the car presents superbly. The sparkling paint cloaks arrow-straight panels featuring tight, consistent gaps. The vinyl appears perfect, as does the trim. The 1972 model year marked the end of the Charger’s concealed headlamps, which this car features. The glass is crystal clear, and the SE rolls on new Magnum 500 wheels and BF Goodrich tires. If the buyer prefers authenticity, the seller will refit the original wheels and wheel covers and will reduce the price accordingly.
The Charger’s interior, trimmed in Blue cloth and vinyl, reveals a couple of the car’s few cosmetic shortcomings. A closer look at the dash reveals a crack in the pad above the center A/C vents. There are no close-up shots confirming this, but I’m pretty sure there might be a problem. There may be dirty marks on the carpet beneath the driver’s feet, but beyond that, there isn’t much to criticize cosmetically. The seller says the air conditioning system is complete, but it doesn’t blow cold. Other highlights include a pushbutton radio (which works intermittently), a rear defogger, the optional light package, and a clock.
This Charger is powered by the entry-level V8. It is the 318ci powerplant, sending 150hp and 260 ft/lbs of torque to the road via a three-speed TorqueFlite transmission. In keeping with the luxury leanings, the car also features power steering and power brakes. It won’t be fast, but it is numbers-matching. No mechanical shortcomings have been identified, so potential buyers can consider it turnkey. Enthusiasts focused on documentation will love this car. The deal includes the original Broadcast Sheet, Window Sticker, Dealer Order Form, Dealer Invoice, Owner’s Manual, Warranty documentation, and the factory keys and key punch tag.
It must be a bitter pill to swallow when an owner lists a classic, believes they’ve achieved a successful sale, only to discover something has gone awry and they must start again. That is the situation with this 1972 Dodge Charger Special Edition, and I feel the seller’s pain as they begin the process from scratch. It received only two bids at the last auction, which may be because the auction opened at a relatively high figure. Do you think this auction will be successful for the seller? This Charger is beautiful, but I personally never cared for this formal roofline. As the owner f a ’70 Charger 500, it took a little while for me to warm to the fuselage look, but I did come to appreciate it. GLWTA!! :-)
Over the years, the 3rd Gen Charger has grown on me, so long as it has the hide away headlights. The 318, column shift and bench seat is a negative for me, the a/c is a positive. The 318 is a rock solid engine and this car would make a nice cruiser to local car shows, but the price for me, is a bit high. I would be comfortable at $20 large. More performance oriented cars are starting to hit the market in the $25k range, so more people are going to drop that bank on those cars first.
Very nice example and great price! That it’s not some rip-roaring powerhouse with a stick to row it with probably contributed in part to its existing today. What do you want to bet that this would be a terrific interstate cruiser with its cavernous trunk and “thrifty” small block under the hood?
Not that I’m biased towards these (which I am) but having driven one a lot like this beauty from the Reno area to Lost Wages-err, Las Vegas-for many months as a kid they were well designed to do that job well.

I had a ’74 Charger SE with the 318 ~ nice car but a tad bit underpowered.
This is a very nice Charger I believe if this had a console with a floor shift good chance it would have sold already. When i was 17 a friend had a 72 Charger with a 318 with headers and a nice duel exhaust with a automatic on the floor car had a great sound loved driving that car.
No close up of the gauges or odometer…how many miles are on this car?
