Sno Goer: 1985 ASV Track Truck 2500

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

These half-track/half-wheel beasts are hard to categorize. They can be used either with snow or without snow, although you may have a tough time breaking trails with wheels on the front rather than tracks. This 1985 ASV Track Truck 2500 can be found listed here on eBay in Boise, Idaho and the seller has an unmet opening bid price of $6,500 listed. Even then, the reserve won’t be met.

We’ve seen a shop teacher’s handful of these unique vehicles over the years here on Barn Finds and I think they’re always interesting to see. Even more so now that we’re on the eve/countdown/cusp/edge of our first real snowstorm of the season. This example is unusual and somewhat rare in that it comes with the rear covered portion that has to be downright luxurious for any passengers riding back there in the winter.

All Season Vehicles is a company that was started by Edgar Hetteen of both Polaris and Arctic Cat fame, along with Gary Lemke, one of the top Arctic Cat dealers in the country. They started ASV to try to weather (no pun intended) the bad years when snowfall amounts weren’t enough to sell enough snowmobiles and the Track Truck was their first offering – the company is still around today. It’s the same idea of when snowmobile companies started making minibikes, personal watercraft, ATVs, and other non-snow-dependant vehicles.

The photos here are fairly disappointing and I know that’s a broken record, but man. They’re all over the board with verticals and horizontals and diagonals. Six out of the sixteen photos are brochure images and one is a photo of a photo. It’s hard to really tell the condition with so few images. At least what is shown appears to be in pretty good condition. The Topper is a factory option according to this old advertisement.

Since there are no photos showing the 73-hp, 151 cubic-inch Jeep inline-four engine, or 2.5L engine, hence the 2500 model name, I thought I’d show you the one photo of the rear interior. The seller bought this one last year, put some money into it, and decided to buy something else. It must not have worked like they thought it would but it runs well and has no leaks. They mention that adding some “Mattracks” on the front would make quite a difference and I think they’re right, at least in the snow. Any thoughts on this Track Truck?

It almost looks like this could be a fire department rescue rig,
or was owned by a ski lodge, etc.,judging by the numbers on the
    right rear.

Cool rig Scotty, pun intended. I think I would rather operate this rig now days compared to a sled. Front and rear heaters. Would make a great ice, deer, card playing shack. Curios on the reserve. A fun find. Now I am singing that Boise Idaho song.

Word of caution to potential buyers…..if the license plate reads “REDRUM”, might want to run a title search…

these were used by Manitoba Hydro up north. The wheels up front are a big disappointment. It should have the tracks to make it unstoppable. With the tracks on you can even go over marshes. as long as they aren’t too deep.

What a fun toy if you’re into playing in the snow. Personally I will stay inside next to the fire where its warm and wait for the snow to melt

Perhaps differential braking on the tracks would negate the disadvantage of having tires on the front. Also, wouldn’t skis work almost as well as tracks on the front? And at a lower cost. They are listed as an option in the advertisement.

I think you’re right–the ad claims it will turn in its own length with “Posi-Turn”.

It’s got a pair of hydrostatic motors so there’s apparently some way to turn it like a zero-turn mower.
