Equipped with new sheet metal and a 440, this Plymouth Satellite is an eye catching project. This stalled project is a great start to a restoration. Needing to be completed, this Mopar project is offered for $3,000. Check it out here on craigslist out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thanks to Russ for sharing this muscle project!
With this project you will receive a 440 cubic inch V8 that features rebuilt heads. Also the seller is including a transmission, but he is unsure if it is correct for the car. Despite the included engine, there is no information stating that is a factory 440 car. The engine bay is vacant, but it seems this is a factory air conditioned car. Most of the A/C components are still in the engine bay but a one of the lines look to have been cut. There is no significant rust in the engine compartment which is an added bonus to this project.
A bit bare, but featuring new floors, the interior holds little other than a couple of door panels, and the dash. The passenger side floor is in need of paint for sure. “Extra stuff” is included in the sale of this Mopar, but it is not exactly clear what the extra stuff may be. I would assume some spares specifically from the car, as well as maybe a few nice and or new parts scored for the restoration.
Obviously the hood and driver door is not currently installed on this Satellite, but rest assured that they are both included with the car, but that they are not in the photos. The quarters are “new” but are still in need of finishing work. There is no significant damage on the exterior, but there is a minor dent on the driver front fender, and a minor ding on the passenger front fender. At this stage rust looks to be pretty well cornered on this machine. The trunk floor has surface rust with some pitting, but a solid wire wheeling with some epoxy or enamel based paint would suffice. Typically $3,000 can you get all sorts of cars in the muscle car market, but few will be as solid as this Satellite. Would you take on this Satellite project?
As far as I know , the 68 Satellites never came with a 440 , I’m not sure a big block was even offered unless you ordered a police car package , GTX or Road Runner. If they did, it would likely not have been in a base Satellite coupe .The car has no trim on it ,so its not even a Sports Satellite. This car likely was 318 powered , and judging by the guys ad the small block crossmember may still be in the car . These B bodies are getting hard to find now, I’ll bet someone snatches it up and makes yet another boring Road Runner clone, which is probably what this owner had planned to do as well. .
Actually you could get a 383 in a Satellite in 1968. That was the largest displacement option and some came with a 4 speed. If you wanted a 440 in this body style you bought a GTX.
Correct also no 440 in road runner till 69, 383 or hemi in 68
Car is sold, I am picking it up Friday, Stay tuned…
Keep us posted.
You should tell the seller to pull the ad. I hate when they keep them up.
GL John with the resto, hope it is everything you hoped for, with no surprises!!
I personally have no problem with the idea of making it into a roadrunner clone as long as the owner is honest about it, i personally would make it into a roadrunner but in day 2 style with a jacked up rear, mags, ec.
I will never understand the puzzle that is percieved old car value. Here we have a Sattelite, a notch ABOVE a RR, yet it is so much cheaper then a RR today, even if it is the same body and in much better shape then most RRs for sale. It doesn’t matter if your car goes Beep Beep or honk honk, as long as it looks the same, does it? Obviously, prices do not reflect the love of the hobby, but the love of potential profit. This is what stinks in Whoville in a nutshell. This is why average guys in their garage are out of the old car game, makes me so sad.
I agree with you. I’m going to build a clone because I want what I want and am going to drive it not let it sit in the garage afraid to drive it because a chip might make it worth less.
Nailed it. Having what you want & then enjoying it by driving what you created is what wrenching & building is all about
Why not leave it a Satellite and put a big block in it and go cruising ? They made more Belvederes and Satellites then they did Road Runners ,but you never see them anymore. I think it would look really nice as a hopped up Satellite ; and it would really stand out in a sea of Ho-Hum clones
The manual for my 68 Satellite does show that big blocks were not the base engine. But some must have been ordered ?
just by the wording, I’d question if the engine and tranny were extra he states ” I have it” not that he will throw it in
Here is a ’68 Satellite I bought in the late 80’s for $2K, slant six, Torqueflite. I had a built 440 and a manual shift 727 I put in it after changing the K frame. The most fun I have ever had getting 4 mpg. All original paint except for right front fender.
I was hoping the ad was this car…
