Solid SS 396 Roller: 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle

Although there are plenty of others, one of the fun factors about the Chevelle is that an SS package was available immediately, with Chevrolet wasting no time attracting buyers interested in something a bit more exciting than your average A-Body when the car was introduced as a 1964 offering.  In terms of performance, it also wasn’t long into the run before Chevy introduced 396 power, with the Chevelle SS 396 becoming its own series, such as this 1966 model here on eBay in Sidney, Nebraska.  This one’s a project and in need of a heart, but the steel here seems to be in very nice shape to work with.  Others tend to agree, as 31 bids have already taken the current bid up to $12,100.

Unfortunately, the bay is empty, and there’s no explanation as to why the big block was removed from what appears to be such a solid Chevy.  If there’s a positive, it’s that the compartment is visible, which seems close to being ready to drop in whatever powerplant the new owner desires.  Something to consider is that the seller mentions he has a line on a complete 1967 engine, which might be worth following up on unless you already have another one in mind.  Thankfully, the original 4-speed manual transmission and shifter are both present, so hopefully, those components will find their way back into the car.

It’s also not reported how long ago the Chevelle was turned blue, as the original color is reported to have been silver.  A tasteful amount of custom pinstriping still adorns a few of the panels, so at one time, this one was likely a very sharp boulevard cruiser.  However, with the amount of fading, I’m guessing that was probably quite some time ago.  Aside from a dent in the left fender and some minor rust on the same-side quarter panel, it doesn’t appear that much time or effort would be required to prep the body for a respray.  I kind of like the blue, but returning it to silver would be a good option as well, or whatever color the buyer deems best here.

The seats have been removed, but come with the sale, and it’s a positive that we get to see the entire floor, which seems nice and sturdy for the most part.  The solid nature continues beneath, as everything we can see below also appears well-preserved, so there may not be much attention needed on the bottom side.  It would be great if this one still contained the original 396 in the bay, but with all the strong bones this 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS has to work with, it certainly appears to be a worthwhile and rewarding project to consider.  What do you think?

Might be a good deal but would have to see more pictures to help determine the overall condition/what’s missing/needs to be fixed. And hopefully find a build sheet.

Looks like solid project, not perfect, but better than most real 1966 Chevelle SS’s. There are some nits to pick, but why bother, the bidders likely know what they are looking at. Nobody can criticize the seller, he provided a straightforward description and good picture, the auction is no reserve, with a $1,500 opening bid. Which at the moment stands at $12,300 with 32 bids.
