Special Edition Pony: 2001 Ford Mustang GT Bullitt

It’s always rewarding for Ford fans anytime the brand offers a special edition Mustang, and even better when a great name is chosen for the occasion.  Moviegoers were treated to a crime film called Bullitt back in ’68 that featured Steve McQueen as police lieutenant Frank Bullitt, and while some car buffs probably aren’t familiar with the actual plot, they sure know the chase scene.  It’s Ford versus Dodge, with McQueen behind the wheel of the “winner”, a 1968 Mustang GT Fastback.  Back in 2001, Ford offered a Mustang GT with a limited edition package known as the Bullitt, borrowing the name from the film, with this pony here on eBay being what appears to be a nice example.  This one’s located in Billings, Montana, and can be yours right now for the buy-it-now price of $15,490.

Although also offered in True Blue and Black, McQueen would have been proud that the owner here chose the same Highland Green color as the Mustang he was behind the wheel of in the movie.  Production totals for the Bullitt reached 5,582 units, so while this one’s not uber rare, it is a lot less common than a basic GT.  We don’t get much regarding this car’s history, but the photos seem to show a nicely preserved exterior, and a finish that still shines much like it would have back around the turn of the century.  Some exclusive features here are the special wheels and a brushed-aluminum fuel door.

During this period, Ford was using the 4.6-liter V8 engine in the GT, which produced a satisfying 260 horsepower.  Adding the Bullitt package got buyers a cast aluminum intake manifold and a pair of high-flow mufflers, which helped boost that number to 265.  Also included were the same Brembo brakes as found on the Cobra, subframe connectors, and a slightly lowered suspension.  These cars all came equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission.  The seller mentions that this one has very low miles, so I’m assuming this indicates that the 33,990 reading on the odometer is actual.

Inside, the instrument panel features some retro-styling, and the gear shift knob is made from aluminum, as are the pedals.  Like a piece of fine art, these cars were also numbered, with this one featuring the unique Limited Edition number of 01618.  The seller may be willing to negotiate a bit here on the cost, as he invites offers and provides the appropriate button, plus states that cash talks.  Is this 2001 Bullitt one you’d enjoy adding to your Mustang collection?

Gorgeous cars. Buddy had one just like this. I was surprised by the sound of the exhaust. Very aggresive from the factory.

This Bullitt model was a clean, straightforward package. Nothing fancy, just some basic performance upgrades and some trim changes. But to me they came across as clean and attractive and a bit understated, which was fine. And as Mike notes, to me the only color to have would be dark green. This looks like a nice example.

Cars are on here all the time with questionable mileage actually a whole lot and the writer always says something like from the looks of the interior or from looking at the engine bay those mileage numbers are believable. The cars have no proof of mileage. No paper trail. No repairs list.. nothing.
This car has a 6 digit odometer. If the dashboard says 33k miles that’s what it is, you don’t have to assume or guess like so many other cars on this sight. If it has a 5 digit odometer and doesn’t come with any paperwork or solid proof of mileage. It’s probably 140k not 40k. Yes I’m ranting I just hate that type of writing.
