How bad can a car or truck get before it is not saleable? This 1976 International Harvester Scout II is believed to be a Spirit of 76 Edition Scout. It is located in York, Pennsylvania and is definitely a project, if not a parts vehicle. Henry Reining sent us the link for this Scout II that is listed here on Craigslist for an asking price of $3,900. Some might think that the price is $4,000 t00 high and they might need to pay someone to take this away. The Scout II has been listed for about a month and is one of two special Scouts produced in 1976 to celebrate the country’s bicentennial. This other special edition Scout II was the Patriot edition. Both special edition Scouts were painted white with red and blue stripes. The Spirit of 76 was equipped with a blue soft top; while the Patriot had a white hard top.
The seats on the interior are trashed and the rest of the interior is unrestored and shows wear and fading throughout. The Scout is shifted via an automatic transmission. The seller states that the vehicle is not running but does have a clear title. There are not many pictures of the interior but the Scout II should have a factory roll bar installed underneath the worn Whitco soft top. The Scout II appears authentic because it has the Wedgewood Blue interior, chrome grill, blud soft top and 1976 decal applique. The original chrome reverse rally wheels have been replaced with aftermarket aluminum vector wheels.
The odometer reading for this 1976 International Harvester Scout II is not listed and the seller appears to be a dealer. The first generation of the Scout was called a Scout 80 and manufactured from 1960 to 1965. The second generation of Scout was called the Scout 800 which was produced in three sub-models (800, 800A, and 800B). In 1971, the third generation model was introduced and produced until 1980. It was called the Scout II (like this model).
While not running, the seller states that this Scout II comes with a 304 cubic inch V8 engine. The amount of rust that is evident on this vehicle makes it look like none of the body panels can be saved. A restoration of this vehicle would be purely out of love because the work would be extensive. However, you never know and someone my pick up this Spirit of 76 Edition Scout II and restore it.
It’d cost more to transfer the title than the thing is worth!
banged up and crispy.
I may be wrong here. But when I was looking at the Craigslist ad when this popped up on fast finds, I get the feeling that someone opened up both doors, and now……. They can’t even be closed. Perhaps its a trick of the eyes or the photography, but it sure looks like everything just sagged and now you can’t close them. I’d be surprised if the frame isn’t rotten in half. It’s a shame because I always thought these are great little trucks. They just unfortunately had a tendency to rust. Its also a shame because there isnt many of these around.
You are exactly right on body sag, body mount/support is right in line with the leading edge of the door and is the first to go, the back of the door frame is next and have seen them rust through almost to the latch/striker with the quarters flapping in the breeze. there’s nothing here but a once fancy paint job and there ain’t much of that left! I’d have to make sure my tetanus shots were up to date before I even loaded it for scrap.
Just needs Ceracoat.
I wonder if the seller accidentally added an extra zero… or two (!) to the sale price.
How much is being offered to haul this load of scrap metal away?
Bought a car from them about 15 years ago and still driving it today. Very nice people, the owner’s wife gave me a Bible when I bought it. Neat place, the second floor looks like a 1950’s diner with a checkerboard floor. They use it a showroom for classic cars.
Looks like they might have dropped this heap from the 2nd floor, into a swamp, and left it there for a couple decades.
If I went to buy a car and someone handed me a bible, I couldn’t get away from the place fast enough. Maybe she should lay hands on this pile of junk and ask for it to be resurrected
Whoa, that joke is going way tooooooo far. Keep it real on here…if you do not like the vehicle in question, respect the venue….all you comedians on here should not quit your night gig!
“Gasp! Clutch the pearls! A blasphemous joke at Christmastime!” I thought it was funny.
i bought a 71 TR6 from an older guy in 83. the AM radio had a Christian station on it. thought gotta be Kosher? (pun) got home; the L. front tire came off. took out the fender. transaxle broke out a few months later. had to aim at potholes to get the wipers to work. sold asis. my own stupidity.

hmm, maybe you should offer the bible back so she could pray to find a buyer on this one, looks like might need a hand from God.
Whoever dragged this heap out of the woods should be arrested for desecrating a gravesite.
This would look good on my front lawn
I was just wondering if I can buy this and park it in front of the house while my wife is away.
Not rusted as bad as my last 87 YOTA pickup
It’s just a ‘spirit’ of it’s former self.
Not sure even Dennis Collins would want this!
Where’s that ‘crusher’ when it’s most needed?
By the tine all the body panels and frame is replaced, the engine & other mechnicals are repaired/replaced is it “restored” or replaced? Kind of like restoring George Washington’s hatched…it only needs a new handle and blade.

Absolutely ridiculous price. Are there any good parts on it if so 300 bucks !!
Junk-$$$$!!
These IH have a certain something, neighbor bought one during that mid 70’s ute craze, chiding the usual popular choices of Wagoneers, Blazers and Broncos. Lacking frills and pizzazz, the Scout was rooted true basic. I don’t recall the options packages if any. We had a “neighborhood” IH dealership, mostly big trucks but showroom had couple of Scout and Travelalls inside, this was up until in the 80’s (?). Sprawled within the city limits of Chicago’s near northwest side industrial corridor dried up, the vast property was leveled became dismal outdoor shopping strip and now an upscale residential area. Sign of the times.
But in the ‘spirit’ of levity….“ I don’t know who once owned this IH Scout, William Howard Taft, William Jennings Bryan, William Tell – whoever. This Spirit is dead – if it ever had one – it’s gone. You’re rebuilding a rat ship here.”
Nothing a $100,000 can’t fix
Spriit 0f 76. Thats 1876 folks.
RAN WHEN PARKED. needs TLC
First rule for buying an older convertible- if the doors are both open in the pictures it is a sign…
This Spirit of 76 gave up the ghost years ago.
As a youngster , these were a common site ,they say tastes change but i can certify that mine haven’t changed for these ugly hulks …
On a different note , being a first amendment supporter , all comments are allowed although some are annoying
YOLO

Merry Christmas to all
Since when did they start posting scrap metal on this site?
And I’m worried about selling my vintage cars! Unreal what folks consider valuable. I’m sure it will be me thinking the same when I sell!
It’ll BUFF OUT 🤣🤣 🤯🤪
