Split-Window Project: 1963 Chevrolet Corvette

The 1963 model year was a big one for the Chevrolet Corvette. The car had finally been redesigned after 10 years on the original platform. The buying public liked what they saw, and sales increased by nearly 50%, thanks in part to the new enclosed coupe body style that joined the convertible. The seller offers a 1963 “split-window” coupe that’s said to run and drive, but there’s still plenty to do. Located in Santa Ana, California, this iconic ‘Vette is available here on eBay for $125,000.

For those not familiar with the evolution of the Corvette, why is the ’63 split-window coupe iconic? Because it was a one-year-only design. After receiving complaints from racers (and probably other Corvette owners) about visibility issues, the rear glass became one larger piece in 1964. So, only 10,594 copies of the split-window were built compared to many more without in 1964-67.

We’re told this Corvette was a “barn find,” although that term seems to have different meanings to different people. It was a one-owner sports car that may have been on the Left Coast all its life. It’s said to run and drive, but the seller’s video shows it idling without a water hose hooked up, so we’re guessing that’s just in short bursts. A 327 cubic inch V8 was the only engine offered in 1963, but four horsepower variations were on the list. We assume this one has the standard 250 horses.

Some work has already been done. The tires, partial brakes, windshield, exhaust, and some interior pieces are said to be new. We assume everything else is original at 76,000 miles, including the automatic transmission (2-speed Powerglide?). The seller refers to this ‘Vette as being an “easy restoration,” but how much on top of the $125k entry point will it take to have a classic like this to show off?

It might be an “easy” restoration, but it’s going to be costly as well. Will be beautiful restored to its’ former glory! GLWTA!! :-)

If I am not mistaken, that looks like the 327/300HP Carter Carburetor.

I winced when I saw this beautiful machine’s iconic back end backed up to a Gremlin (with its very not beautiful back end). At least it wasn’t a Pacer!

Waaaaaaaaayyyyyy too much asking price in it’s current condition, leaves no meat on the bone for restoration! I’ll pass.

    Wow,the prices on those…
Had a reunion of the “old neighborhood” recently and one of the old timers bought his ’63 coupe that he apparently purchased at the bottom of it’s depreciation cycle
.. at $1700.!! He wisely lined up storage for it when he served in ‘Nam, and today that car is stunningly cherry/ spotless,a bright red car.
I broke his balls and said I prefer the roadster….

Considering last month a 1963 split window in infinitely better shape than this with the L75 engine sold on BaT for 115K..This guys ask is kinda out of the question…The only flaw in the 115K Vette is a colour change .

If it’s such an “easy restoration”, why doesn’t the owner do it? He’ll have a better chance of seeing God, than getting $125k for the car.

I just sold my black/black split window with the same equipment , matching numbers and needing nothing for 140K , it had 52K miles but I doubt if you could make this one match for 15K.

Crazy price on a car that needs a $100k restoration to be worth $140k.

An outrageous price for a car worth about half that. Collectors have made this a joke when it comes time to buy. Let’s get real.

Is this the same one that keeps poping up ? Think it is because of the auto and color……

Wonder if it’s early enough to have those storage compartments under the seats?

Yeah I love these C2 Corvettes. I used to own one a1966 coupe, when they were reasonable to buy and that was in 1975 – 6 is when I purchased mine.
Now everybody thinks they’ve got gold when they’re selling one of these.
In my opinion 35 grand less and that would probably be worth it.
