Sport Sedan Project: 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle

Disclosure: Barn Finds may receive compensation from clicks and purchases. Use caution when purchasing vehicles long distance. We recommend inspections before sending money.

From its introduction in 1964, the Chevelle quickly became Chevrolet’s second-best-selling line of automobiles. And held on to that spot for many years to come. That included the Malibu Sport Sedan, which was Chevy-speak for a 4-door hardtop. This example from 1969 is said to run and drive, but it’s cosmetically challenged after 57 years. Offered by a dealer in Crete, Illinois, and here on eBay, the asking price is $7,800.

Hardtops dominated automobile production in the 1950s through the 1970s. In a lot of cases, they came with two doors, but four-door versions were popular with families. Malibu Sport Coupes were all the rage in the 1960s and outsold the Sport Sedans, which numbered about 19,000 in 1969. The second generation of the Chevelle ran from 1968 to 1972, with the ’69 editions getting a noticeable update in rooflines and front and rear clips.

This example wears old dark blue paint, which may or may not be original. Since one of the front fenders and the trunk lid are black, that suggests replacements due to accidents or corrosion. The seller doesn’t mention either of these possibilities. It also has a black vinyl roof and a fabric interior that may need work. This car runs and drives, but we’re not told how well, and the Malibu appears to be wearing Buick rally-style wheels.

Under the hood resides a 350 cubic inch V8, which may have been the first year offered outside of the Camaro. Its horsepower rating is 250, which implies a 2-barrel carburetor. A TH-350 automatic transmission is in play, and we’re guessing the drivetrain is original, but we don’t know the mileage on the car. Factory air conditioning is present, and we hope it works as the Summer fast approaches. Is this a project you’d undertake at the seller’s price point?

$7800 is a bit of a stretch given the shape it’s currently in, but there’s certainly a lot of potential here, if the number of doors isn’t a deal-breaker. GLWTS.

Ridiculous ask for a 4 door in such deplorable condition. But then, it is a dealer, and I’m sure he knows what he has. 🤣

Not sure if he knows what he has ” 4-door sport coupe”. LOL!
Ok, I’m pretty sure it’s a typo, but still funny to imagine that one.
For $7,800, there’s a whole lot of body work needing to be done, although it looks like some has already started, maybe out of necessity looking at the right front fender.
And, of course, no underside pics, which can’t be pretty judging by the body.
      $3,000 tops.

Given how BMW and Mercedes have corrupted the designations with their 4-door coupe aberrations you may have to give the seller a pass.

Chevelles were everywhere in ’69. Four door hardtops, not so much. You’re gonna have to love this one.

Be kinda cool! And nothing wrong with a 69 2 barrel 350. They had plenty of punch back in the day! Even with 4 doors, this one would be fun. It would be a heavy lift to restore but it’d be fun to clean up and tool around in. People do it with rusty old pickups all the time!

Yes heavy financial lift and a 4 door! No way to grow or recoup your investment…actually it would continue to depreciate in price, year to year….if your going to place that kind of Dinero you better be looking for a 2 door, and a potential cash out date!

Back in the day a 10year old 4dr in this condition $75-$100 and it would have been just my next beater till I killed it.

4 door hardtop chevelles are very rarely seen even back then, I can only recall ever seeing one other and it was a 66 that my brothers junked in the late 70’s. I probably saw more than that but never really registered because they were 4 doors and who paid attention to 4 doors back then

if the wheel base is longer, this hardtop would handle better than a coupe. For this that struggle with the utilitarianistic (scrabble that !) aspect, just shave the rear door handles

Back in the day it would have been bought cheap and parted out, then scrapped. Easy to find a use for a good 350 and trans, maybe interior too. Would have been a good winter beater too for that matter. Good snow tires and some weight in the trunk is all you need!

You are right, I live in California where there is no need for winter beaters. You might have a beater, but you would drive it for years and would look for something you’d actually want to drive. In the 1980’s and early-1990’s the local Pick N Pull’s were full of 1960’s and early-1970’s 4 doors and full sized cars. Like you, we looked for trim and interior parts that could be used on more desirable models as well as drivetrains from full sized cars BOP cars. That’s largely why once common cars are so rare today, they were considered expendable and rarely made it past the bottom of the depreciation curve.

$3500 to $4000 , a good starter project car. Lots to learn on a early model car like this one.

This would make for a good father-son project…one I would have loved to be a part of back in those days. Unfortunately, my dad was not the mechanically inclined type, so that never happened. But it led me to learn all I have learned over the years and develop a deep appreciation for classic cars, no matter the make.(Hint: I’m a Mopar man & proud of it!) That’s how the hobby endures. May the road ahead be smoother than the road behind! 🤘

That’s what keeps the ball rolling. If you can get 1 kid interested in a old school car, you have done good.I remember the first old car I heard run with Hollywood mufflers , I was instantly hooked. Im 71 now and have a garage full of cars , and still want more!!

Blue and black… check, AC… check, 350 V8… check. O.K. some rust, tattered seat covers, needs paint back to original. A Man could fix all these things pretty cheaply.

        4 door HARD TOP.
antique, all American, solid n straight, full frame..
lets appreciate our old US made cars.
Everyone drives 4 door cars now, no ones complaining about the ‘Dodge’ Charger.
This doest have to be a show car or a drag car.
But for all of those who wanna slap an American flag sticker on an import they paid big money with a bank loan, you could OWN a legit American made car, with 4 doors, plenty of power, no ‘software’ bountiful parts selection and it increases in value.
Blah blah 4sp, blah blah horsepower, blah blah cool kid in high school 🙄

I agree with your comment here. I would put Chevy ralley rims on this car and add dual exhaust and slowly work on it.

Robert at 63 I’ve owned well north of 100 vehicles, my wife once asked me “ why don’t I just buy that 1 dream car I’ve always wanted “ my response honey there is no such thing as 1 dream car. At this point my list just keeps growing!
I do wholeheartedly agree in getting younger kids interested in old school muscle cars or just older cars. Once the seed is planted they find their own favorites.
