Spotless Driver: 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

While it may not be a genuine muscle car, this 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme could hold its head high in elite company. Every aspect of this classic presents superbly, and the healthy V8 under the hood provides excellent performance when the pedal meets the metal. After little more than a year’s ownership, the seller feels it needs a new home with someone who appreciates all it offers. Therefore, they have listed it for sale here on Craigslist in Eugene, Oregon. The sale price is $28,500, although the seller may entertain a partial trade for the right vehicle. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Gunter K for spotting this beauty for us.

The history of this Cutlass is unknown, and it has only been in the seller’s possession for around a year. It presents impressively in Copper Metallic with a Black vinyl top. The paint holds a beautifully deep shine, with no significant flaws or defects. The seller doesn’t mention any previous restoration work, but the lack of significant chips and marks suggests it has received at least a partial repaint. There are a few minor marks on the leading edge of the hood and between the two sections of the grille, but the number is low enough to suggest previous remedial work to retain a fresh appearance. The panels are as straight as an arrow, and the seller states that there is no rust to their knowledge. The vinyl top is excellent, as is the trim and glass. Rounding out the exterior is a set of Super Stock I wheels that show no evidence of stains or physical damage.

The Saddle vinyl interior trim offers a classy contrast to the paler exterior paint, and as with the car’s outside, it appears to need nothing. The upholstered surfaces show no signs of wear or other problems, the carpet is excellent, and the dash is perfect. I can spot some wear on the wheel and a mark on the driver’s side of the console, but no other flaws worth mentioning. Apart from bucket seats and a console, the buyer receives air conditioning, a factory tachometer, and an AM radio.

Buyers faced several engine choices when ordering their new Cutlass Supreme in 1970, but this car’s original owner selected the 350ci “Rocket” V8 producing 310hp. They added a three-speed Hydra-Matic transmission and power assistance for the steering and brakes. I acknowledge it isn’t a muscle car, but the ability to cover the ¼ mile in 15.5 seconds is impressive for a vehicle that could comfortably accommodate five adults. The seller says the odometer shows 67,000 miles, but with no verifying evidence, they are unwilling to claim the reading is genuine. However, the overall condition would make such a claim seem plausible. Regardless of the truth on that front, the Cutlass runs and drives perfectly. If the buyer wants to fly in and drive it home, that seems a realistic goal.

It doesn’t seem to matter where you look, this 1970 Cutlass Supreme makes a positive impression. Its panels and paint are excellent, its interior is spotless, and the V8 under the hood means it shouldn’t be found wanting at a “traffic light Grand Prix.” However, the reality is that it needs those attributes to justify the sale price. At $28,500, the price sits at the upper end of what a buyer might expect to pay. It has only been on the market for a few days, but do you think it will find a new home?

These were nice cars and I still like the bodystyle. My older brother bought one of these after he got back from Vietnam. Silver, 350 auto floor shift. I don’t recall if it had AC, but do remember it was a quiet smooth cruiser. Another thing I remember is the fuel gage moved around quite a bit from new with the driving/sloshing fuel.

Nice looking Cutlass Supreme, with the addition of the 442 bumper and dual exhaust. The wheels are Super Stock ll, not Super Stock l, those were the Magnum 500 style wheels in the correct color, refreshing to see they were not painted body color as they did beginning in 1971. Muscle car, no. Nice car, yes!
