GMC Suburbans were already considered icons of the 1980s SUV world, but this 1985 Starcraft Edition pushes the “rad” meter all the way to overload. The fender flares, the paint job, the monochrome grille – it’s all over the top and I love it. And we haven’t even gotten to the interior! The Starcraft company was well known for its conversions of various recreational vehicles, vans, and occasionally, SUVs. This Suburban comes with a rebuilt 454 along with a Turbo 400 transmission, which replaces the original 350. While it’s not numbers matching, the 454 is a nice upgrade, and the seller claims it runs strong. Find the Suburban here on eBay with a $15,900 Buy-It-Now and the option to submit a best offer.
While I know it’s not typical to celebrate an old SUV for its “stance,” it’s hard not to dig how brawny this thing looks with those fat fender flares. The dually rear axle helps fill out the impressive arches, and the extra lighting off the back of the truck should help find the popcorn at the next drive-in movie this thing goes to. The running boards help establish continuity between the front and rear fender flares, and the chrome bumpers look far too good for a used truck that has certainly spent some time outdoors. Actual mileage is not specified; there’s just a random 600 listed in the mileage disclosure.
The interior is really where you get an understanding of the Starcraft treatment. Wood trim and inlays everywhere – and I mean everywhere – and it all looks to be in decent shape. There’s a killer overhead console for the front passengers, and it appears to have a custom equalizer and Escort radar installed within. The door panels are custom, and the wide center console extends all the way up to the dashboard. Leather abounds, and it appears to be dried and cracked. The four-spoke steering wheel also comes with wood trim set inside the spokes, and if all of this doesn’t clue you in, there’s still a custom plaque that proudly features the Starcraft name.
Factory options included power steering, power brakes, tilt steering, auto-locking hubs, towing package, dual air conditioning, and a 31-gallon fuel tank with a skid plate. No reason is given why the original engine was yanked. If it was a diesel, I’d say I have a good idea why the numbers matching engine was pulled in favor of a gas motor, given that those surprisingly durable diesel mills were also quite slow. The 454 is an improvement over both engine options and is a nice upgrade that matches the attitude on display with the Starcraft-enhanced exterior. It’s a rarity but also a bit of a novelty; that being said, I suspect a reasonable offer will be what it takes to help this Suburban find a new forever home.
7 MPG, poor handling, and rough running to boot. What more could you ask for? Just the thing for the up coming five buck a gallon gas prices. Oh yeaj, I forgot, you can tow a boat with it. Bad me.
I spent alot of time in Lake Havasu City during the mid to late 8’s and this was the tow vehicle of choice for the custom high performance boat crowd.
It’s in remarkable shape for its age, probably had a matching boat at one time…
Looks like a hunting lodge inside .
About the same size too.
After all the negative comments, I wish they still made them,I would buy one, the perfect truck for me
Same ones always with the negative comments. He probably drives a Prius
Cool truck smart motor upgrade. I cant spot the transfer case lever in the cab .. They didn’t have electric engagement back then did they ?
Id slap some manual hubs up front , and gain 1mpg. Starcraft had some nic cabin cruiser boats in the 80s 👍
With the 5th digit of the vin being a “k” not a “c” I believe it is/ was 4wd.
100% its clearly 4wd john
im wondering where the transfer case lever is ?
Uh, then buy this one?
It looks pretty cool to me .I would drive that ,great shape for its age .
If I wasn’t out of room-I’d buy that beast
This looks like a perfect candidate for a Gear-Venders overdrive setup. I like it, would love to have it, but at my age I’m getting rid of toys, not buying more.
My 74 was one of the early ones AC and power steering and brakes
But ended up being paint holding the rust together
Went through 2 350s but only cost $3100 new
