Still In The Box: 1998 Honda Dream 50

In 1998, Honda was celebrating its 50th anniversary. They issued the “Dream 50” as a throw-back to the iconic CR110. This one was purchased new and never un-crated! It is up for auction in March at the Sale Rétromobile 2022 in Paris, France. It can be found here on artcurial.com with an auction estimate of 5,000 – 10,000 € or about $6,700 to $13,300 USD. Arguably this bike isn’t the best one at the auction (there are some really cool old H/Ds and race bikes up for grabs), this one might be the biggest conversation piece. Have a look.

The original box is still in great shape. The metal crate that the bike is housed in would be a great way to display the bike. It could be hung from the ceiling or placed on a shelf or put in a corner. What would you do with it?

If the new owner plans on riding (or even starting) this motorcycle, they had better plan on going through the entire drivetrain. Unfortunately, along with zero miles comes nearly 25 years of drying gaskets and the potential for moisture/rust, and corrosion. I have the feeling though, that the fate of this bike might be crated for its entire life, which is still pretty cool. What do you think?

I would put it together and get it running. These bikes are made to be ridden, not put on display and admired. Get it going; spin a few circles with it; stir up some old memories…

Never hoid of it, but then, I stopped looking at any vehicle after 1985. Looks like quite a sophisticated engine, it’s a dual overhead cam with 4 valves and looks like dual port exhaust. I read, it puts out a whopping 5.6 hp at 10,500 rpm and top speed varies with gearing, from the factory, did about 60 mph, tops. Makes my 1st bike a Cub 50 look like a Model T. When I crack the throttle on a bike, I want it to feel like the world is coming apart( and it is, btw), Big Twin, Trident, ( or any “Limey”, for that matter) Z1, not some high tech moped( sans the ped), apparently, it was a dud.

I had one that I shipped over from Japan many years back. Never rode it as I new that within the first mile the obvious 50cc boredom would kick in.
It’s made for hanging on a wall in my eyes.
Be surprised if it went for more than 5K. It’s e repro toy really.

Nice, wonder what it would cost to get it shipped from France. Even not running they could just be a nice piece of art.

“Hey, watch your mouth you dumb friggin’ Swede.”

Sorry, couldn’t resist, Gustafson. Bet you get that every day.

Surely this cannot be a twin cylinder 50cc motorcycle? The pistons would be quarter sized. Torque? What torque? I guess it could have an exhaust pipe for each valve if it is 4 valve DOHC. I’m with the guys who want to ride and/or drive whatever type of machine you’ve got. I would not be a buyer for this as it only has curiosity value, especially with decent bikes being reasonably priced. I saw a V45 Magna locally for $2500 Canadian dollars with 20k kilometers. So, $2000 US with 12,400 miles. That was a great bike in its day. This? Not so much.

If I had a massive man cave set up with many cars and odd things this would look great up high with 4 chains holding it afloat, and tipped 90% so you can see it better. I would love to assemble it but it would never be a factory boxed Honda again.

I’m not a big fan of Honda motorcycles now, but as a kid I wouldn’t think of riding anything else !!
I was lucky enough to have great parents and when I decided I wanted a (mini bike) my Dad brought home a new Honda mini trail Z-50 ! My next was a mini trail 70, then a SL-70, then SL-100, SL-125, and the last one was a XL-250 !!
    I rode the – – – – out of all of them !!
Those old Honda’s are BULLETPROOF, take it out of crate , put gas and oil in it and probably start on first or second kick !

This bike is a huge departure from the little Honda 50’s sold here. Double overhead cam and other racing tweeks make it more powerful (for a 50cc)
50cc was a popular race class in Europe, usually dominated by Derbi and Puch 2 strokes.
