Storage Loss Forces Sale: BMW E30 3-Series Collection

It’s no secret I’m a fan of the classic 1980s BMW 3-Series, also known as the E30. This is the generation immediately following my 1980 320 barn find, otherwise known as an E21. A seller in the U.K. is facing a fear many of us hope to never encounter, that of lost storage space. His collection of Euro-spec E30s must find a new home, and he’s selling it as a lot here on eBay for £24,950.

Despite the shabby surroundings, the seller says the cars are in better shape than they appear in pictures. For those of us in the U.S.A., they simply look good for retaining their desirable slim European bumpers and other overseas-spec items that are hard to come by stateside. More important is that the collection includes a few models with very desirable trim.

There’s a total of five cars available, four of which are said to be mostly sound: a 1989 325i “M-Sport” with a manual transmission; 1988 325i M-Technic convertible; a 1988 316i with “M-Sport” trim; a 1989 316i; and the worst of the lot, a 1990 325i convertible with an automatic that’s missing quite a few parts. The M-Tech convertible is a desirable specimen anywhere; I’m not sure what the “M-Sport” trim translates to overseas.

It may be similar to our sport models, which received a Recaro-like interior, firmed up suspension, three-spoke steering wheel (pre-airbag cars) and a limited-slip differential. Regardless, there appears to be a fair amount of value here, certainly enough to justify the asking price – but the seller may be better off trying to sell the cars individually given the E30s current popularity with younger enthusiasts.

I just saw an ’89 325i Conv.red/tan with auto and 81k miles on it in excellent but not perfect condition. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and has done a great job in both maintenance and in restoring it – other than a few minor cracks in the upholstery and needing a new seal around the windshiled (solid but badly discolored) the rest seems to be in excellent condition. Any body care to comment on what it is worth today??
