With the rising popularity of the Super Sport in the Chevelle lineup by 1968, demand had waned considerably for the offering in the full-size Impala. But it would remain in production through the balance of the decade. This ’68 Impala is well-worn from sitting since 1982 yet has surviving SS badging and the prerequisite bucket seats, though not much is left of them. Located in a lot in Hesperia, California, this Chevy will need a lot of love (and money) to be brought back to life, but the cost of acquisition is low at $1,800 here on Barn Finds Classifieds.
Chevrolet introduced the Super Sport in 1961 as a muscle car and sales were low. For 1962 (and going forward), they redefined it as a stylish automobile that could be had with or without any performance elements. Sales went through the ceiling and would remain high until falling after the middle of the decade. Estimates are that production numbers in 1968 would be 38,000 Impala SS cars with a small percentage being convertibles like the seller’s machine.
The convertible here is parked next to this Olds Cutlass 442 in the photos, but it has not fared nearly as well over time. Perhaps the cars shared the same garage space since 1982 and may be seeing the light of day for the first time in decades. We understand the odometer reading is under 20,000 miles, but 120,000 would seem more likely. The seller refers to a video being available, but that link needs to be amended to the listing.
Under the hood should be a 327 cubic inch V8 which the seller has not attempted to start. It’s likely paired with a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission given the number of pedals. While the exterior itself is pretty rough, the interior has had a harder time as the top deteriorated leaving the passenger compartment exposed to who knows what. Interesting for a drop-top of this era is an under-the-dash air conditioning unit, though we don’t know if the compressor is still present. The car is being sold on “application for duplicate title” and the Impala is in non-Op status meaning no excessive back DMV fees will apply if the Chevy remains in California.

Worth it in parts. The bucket seat cores are 500 a pair. The cig lighter normally goes for 100-150.The console is worth 300 500 depending on condition. The convertible top stuff is worth good $ too.Wonder what the trunk and under carriage look like.Might be a 275 hp 327 4bbl th 400 12 bolt 4 link car.If was close by I’d buy it .Fair price imo.glwts.
I looked for that Odd stick of gum type tach I’ve only seen on the impala Ss.
u16 gauge package. It’s where the fuel gauge is.
bidding is at $6750 for this pile of work
Must be nice to have that much extra money lying around to throw it at a project like this.
Hmm, don’t think I’d call it “stored”. More like cast or tossed aside and forgotten. Comment about value of parts makes sense though.
I have been looking for a1968 impala project for awhile that I can work on. I used to have one but it’s hard to find an affordable one. If I can buy the car as listed I might be able to bring it home. Thank you
Hmmmm, this isn’t a factory air car,l think 🤔, with that being true 🤔, l would, stay away, from this one, title paperwork, started, but not done yet, why, and it’s pretty rough, like l say,it’s okay, but not for me,plus it’s to far away, from my location.
🤔 1968 Impala SS? Where are the SS emblems? Where is the 396/TH400?
Where is the rare as hens teeth SS hood? I sure hope the winning bidder is knowledgeable enough to realize that this is NOT an SS, just your average
The 68 SS B body came with a stock hood. The Z24 SS 427 package came with a domed hood. 1967 had the hens teeth die cast addition as you refer to them. You could order a SS with a 307 if you wanted to in 68..The SS designation is attached to the fender emblems where it says Impala in 68.You could order a 1968 B body SS 427 without the z24 package and it has Impala badges .A Z24 will not say Impala anywhere on the vehicle. SS series was 16447.on the data plate,
