Stored 44 Years: 1965 Ford Mustang

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The first Ford Mustangs went on sale in April 1964 and more than 1.3 million would follow before the curtain came down on the 1966 model year. Mustangs built before the Fall of 1964 are considered by some to be 1964 ½ editions, but they were titled as 1965 cars just like those produced later in the year. The seller’s vehicle must have been built over the summer when the 289 cubic inch V8 replaced the original 260. This one was in storage for 44 years and runs well now but needs cosmetic attention. Located in Chester, New York, this Ford is available here on eBay where the reserve has yet to be satisfied at $8,901.04.

A bit of history comes with this Mustang. The second owner bought the car in 1972 and – after using it sparingly – put the car up on blocks in his garage and left it there until the seller acquired it in 2021. The mileage is just 43,000 miles so the D-code 210 hp 289 V8 was coaxed back to life with a bit of work. For reasons unknown, its original 4-speed manual was replaced with a 3-speed and a posi-traction rear axle.

The transmission isn’t the only thing that was changed at some point. The Ford left the factory painted Chantilly Beige, but someone opted to change that to teal and didn’t do a thorough job as the door jambs were ignored. There is a little rust in the front fenders, but the undercarriage looks quite nice as does the trunk. The passenger-side rear quarter panel looks to have had some work done to it and the paint there doesn’t match.

A fair amount of work has already been done by the seller, so the buyer won’t have to. That includes replacing the tires, gas tank, battery, brakes, and a tune-up plus a coolant change. The car has dual exhaust with side-mounted flex pipes, so the Mustang is anything but quiet. The Ford was treated to air conditioning by a dealer when it was sold new, but there’s a bad bearing in the compressor so the belt was removed. The interior is going to need some effort, too, specifically the front seat upholstery and carpeting. Since this is a good running car, it’s one that you could drive and fix up in stages.

The D code 289 would be an early car offered when the 260 was still available. When the 260 was dropped they both were replace by the C, A and K CODE 289’S.

‘The mileage is just 43,000’ [cue laugh track]
‘For reasons unknown, its original 4-speed manual was replaced with a 3-speed and a posi-traction rear axle.’

Big red flags that odo has seen 99,999.9 miles at least once.

I’ll leave the New Jersey road rust to the pros with better eyes. But WTF is that exhaust “system”? In light of the other observations here, I’d say this current bid may be all the money.

Looking at the pictures, the underside looks as clean as some Arizona cars.

yep to everybodys comment. Looks like 64 1/2 by virtue of the generator, cant see the hood or headlight assys to see if it has the correct 64 pieces.
You need to look over this pony over good, its in the middle of the rust belt. I’ll bet its a mud queen. Good luck.

I sure would like to see 1 of the earliest v8 mustangs with 13″ 5 lug wheels!
I don’t think i ever saw a new early mustang with blackwall tires.
Check out that whitewall AND rwl Pirelli tire in the trunk!
    New carpeting will do wonders.
A homemade under the axle exhaust system – straighter pipes may be beneficial, but these type of bendable pipes may not last all that long. Hopefully the rear axle don’t hit them on bad roads.
