Strong Running 351: 1971 Ford Torino GT

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1971 Ford Torino GT is one of those cars that presents well from a few feet away, and fortunately, it doesn’t look all that bad even up close.  The seller says that he bought this one about a year ago, with big plans of fixing it up and getting it back on the road.  This is a case where the unexpected happened, as the owner’s priorities changed to trying to sell his house and move, so the decision has been made to get this car into the hands of someone else.  If you’re ready to take over, this 1971 Torino GT is in Windsor, Colorado, and can be found here on Craigslist.  All things considered, the asking price of $10,000 sounds in the ballpark, and we must thank reader Tony Primo for the great tip here!

A 302 was the base engine for the Torino GT in ’71, with this one featuring the next size up, a 351 Cleveland.  While it would be great to find a 429 here, the 351 is said to be a strong runner, featuring Trick Flow aluminum heads, headers, and a High Energy Ignition distributor.  There’s also an aluminum intake with a Demon carburetor, plus a C6 automatic transmission taking care of the shifting duties for you.  Hopefully, some good life is remaining in the pair, and the main focus for the future owner will end up being mostly cosmetic work.

While the car seems complete on the outside, the body isn’t without a few battle scars, including some injuries to the hood.  The front fender on the passenger side also has some light damage, but from the doors back, the exterior still appears to be in nice shape overall.  It’s not mentioned if yellow is the original color, but this hue works well here, and it seems like a good choice to retain.  This would also be a prime opportunity to lose that flamed jester graphic on the one quarter, and maybe switch out the American Racing wheels in favor of some Ford products.

The one photo provided from the inside shows that much of the interior will require attention, and that this one has a bench seat and column shifter.  The cracked dash will certainly need replacing, and there’s a bit of a wiring mess visible underneath that aftermarket steering wheel.  No headliner is present, and the front seat is well-worn, so the future owner will have to decide whether to put on fresh fabric or perhaps install some buckets instead.  What ideas do you have for this 1971 Ford Torino GT?

Look at this car, how in ‘tarnation could we have possibly gone from this beautiful design to, um, well, you name it today? While the CJ got all the thunder, these were far more prevalent. The 429 was an undisputed monster, Fords small blocks were just right. So,,$10gs( they may take less), another $10gs in restoration, a quick check shows many of the cars listed are sold,( no price) so clearly a market. The ones still for sale are about $18grand( like new) and a 429 over $30, as expected. So a little math shows, these have to be gotten cheaper, and save the headaches of a restoration. Again, one of those designs for the ages. .

My uncle had one of these, a 70 with a 302 4 speed. It was medium blue with this same color interior. Would bet this one came with the same exterior color. He could catch a good 2nd gear rubber bark and chirp 3rd on a hot summer day with the right pavement. All you old timers know what I’m talking about. Was fortunate to grow up within a family of gearheads from both sides.

This looks like a nice deal if the underside looked as good as the topside. The four wheel disc brakes is a nice upgrade and the 351C is nice. Interior needs work but if you don’t doa full blown restoration you can make this car useable for cheap.

Can’t imagine the yellow/blue color combination is the way it came from the factory.
