Supercharged Fox Body: 1990 Ford Mustang LX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Based on appearance alone, this is one tidy 1990 Ford Mustang LX all the way around, with the cleanliness factor by itself enough to pique some interest in this Fox body.  But maybe that bulging hood and those outside gauges are indicators that there’s more than just good looks going on here, and once that tall hood gets lifted there’s a great surprise to be found in the bay, all executed in a way that keeps the pony street friendly and a capable driver.  More on this in a moment, but if you’re already thinking it’s got to be yours the car is located in Belton, Texas, and can be found here on eBay, where bidding has reached $20,100.  Or if you want it in your garage today, there’s also the option to tick the buy-it-now button for $28,500.

According to the seller, the V8 is now achieving somewhere in the range of 480 to 500 horsepower, with a laundry list of fine parts including an Edelbrock Performer II intake and a Vortech T-Trim supercharger.  A complete list of what’s inside the block can be seen here, and while it’s all impressive the Mustang has remained very road-worthy, with the seller mentioning that this one is no drag car but still very streetable.  There’s also a Mishimoto aluminum radiator with dual electric fans to keep things cool under the hood, along with a new A/C compressor to keep the inside at a comfortable temperature as well.

Surprisingly few details are given about the exterior, other than the owner telling us it’s in great shape and has gotten a respray sometime within the last 5 years.  The headlights and tail lights have been replaced, so they have a fresh look and the white wheels are a nice subtle touch too, with everything outside not only in good condition but also done in a very tasteful sort of way.

At first glance, the interior seems mostly stock, but I don’t think that’s the steering wheel that came from the factory on an LX although it looks really at home on the column.  Another custom touch is how the builder eliminated the pair of center dash vents and replaced them with a trio of gauges, which I’m sure is a welcome addition except for maybe on the warmest of days.

We also get a couple of shots from down below, which gives us a good view of those BBK headers and an exhaust system that means business, with a set of Flowmasters and X-pipe, so I’m guessing along with an intimidating whine up front this one’s got a mean rumble out the back as well.  I’m not finding much here not to my liking, and with even bone-stock Fox body values seeming to be on the rise, $28.5k for what we’re viewing before us sounds reasonable in my book.  What do you think?

A clean and attractive build on a desirable car. The gauges are nicely integrated, the hood isn’t in-your-face, the white wheels provide a subtle change. Lots to like here.

The LX coupe, a not-common example of the lowest trim level on the most basic body style becoming the most collectible.

Very nice. Yes, the steering wheel is from an ’89 or older car as ’90 should have an airbag. Also the seats are different. Possibly they are seat covers on the standard vinyl seats. I don’t recognize this pattern and they aren’t the optional articulated sport seats.

Really nice ride here. Love how the builder used the white rims on white body, sharp. JCA i dont recall any fox w vinyl seats. We had a base mode stripper LX 89 5.0, and cloth was std. Not sure how long the T5 will handle that much power.

Yes, vinyl seats came on some four cylinder LXs and possibly some SSPs as an option.

The prices on notchbacks from the late 80’s – early 90’s have gotten crazy. I remember paying $3500 for mine that was in mint condition with a recent respray when I bought it in 95. I like this one a lot. Price seems within reason considering the market for these, Normally I’d prefer a stock hood and less gauges, and if it were mine, I’d probably remove, or rather relocate, the exterior gauges to inside the cabin but I can’t find much else to criticize. I like the white paint and the special edition white pony wheels. Overall it looks like a well executed clean build. My only worry would be keeping the nose pointed forward. I’d imagine this baby could get a lil’ squirrelly with a heavy foot. Nice Five Point O.

I like the gauges but living in AZ, I like the air vents where they reside a lot better when it gets hot and it’s time for the air-conditioning.

I also like to see that this one has the 3G alternator conversion.
