Survivor or Restored? 1970 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet hoped to recapture some of the sales magic of the 1965 Impala (one million units, including the SS). So, Chevy introduced the Custom Coupe in 1968. Essentially, it was a Caprice (formal roofline) with Impala trim, and the fastback Impala was still offered. This 1970 Custom Coupe is a two-owner car that may be largely original, though it purports to have 158,000 miles. Located in Empire, California, the Autumn Gold automobile is available here on craigslist for $35,000. Thanks for the heads-up on this Chevy, “Zappenduster”!

The Caprice was an instant hit when it arrived in mid-1965 to compete with Ford’s new LTD. Both were luxury cars without the luxury price tag. When sold as 2-door hardtops, the Caprice differed visually from the Impala with its more upright roof. So, from 1968 to 1976 (before GM’s full-sized cars were downsized), an Impala Custom Coupe was on the menu.

esides power windows, the seller’s car doesn’t have much more than the usual collection of options. Such as a 350 cubic-inch V8 (we think and with some bling added), automatic transmission (TH-350?), and air conditioning (the compressor has obviously been replaced). There’s plenty of room for you to stretch out inside.

There are no signs of rust, and perhaps the shiny paint is original, though the seller refers to it as “custom.” The interior does look like it’s from 1970 and is tidy, though perhaps a little dirty. The car appears to have been lowered a bit (well, it is in California), but that may be because the car is photographed in slightly tall grass. We’re told everything works as it should, and the Impala wears new Rally wheels (so does that mean the rubber donuts are new, too?). If you’re looking for a Show & Tell car from the 1970s, this could be it, as long as the asking price doesn’t scare you away.

Pricey at $35,000. It looks nice, but the ad doesn’t do enough to justify the asking price, 27 days in the market is probably just the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of other options for the money.

Steve R. I could not agree with you more. 35000 dollars for this model seems like it’s way too high. Especially with 158,000 miles on it. Now if it could be fitted with the SS package back in the day, looking this well maintained, maybe someone could forgive the mileage. I personally would not, even though it is a California car.

California dreaming…. Dad had one, green, fun to climb around in. Enough room for five bodies in the trunk. Super comfortable to ride in.

It’s unlikely to be a survivor. 55 years and 158,000 miles is a long time for GM’s lacquer paint to survive in this condition. More significantly, it’s missing the “Chevrolet” emblem on the trunk lid and the “350” callouts on the front fenders, and the holes have been filled. At the very least, it’s been repainted.

I had one exactly like this one. Mine had a 400 small block with the emblems on the fronts of the fenders. $35,000 way high.

I had a 1969 with a 396 in it. One of the worst cars I ever owned. Drove like a bus, handled like a bus, rode like a bus and, even with a cam, aluminum intake, and headers it performed like a bus.

Too much money for this one. I guess the A/C works with the new aftermarket compressor which is a good thing, because a lot of adds I have seen said they need a recharge. I did notice it has cruise control. Still a nice car but too much money.
