Sweet Hippie Hauler: 1974 Chevy G10 Van

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Bidding is already quite strong for this 1974 Chevrolet G10 Deluxe van, likely due to its impressive cosmetic condition and low mileage of just under 60,000. The short wheelbase models are typically loved by van enthusiasts, and this one has been tastefully upgraded with the cargo area updated to provide lounging and sleeping spaces and plenty of period touches that make it feel like you could be on the way to Woodstock at any minute. Find the Chevy here on eBay where bidding is over $12K and the reserve remains unmet.

The Chevy’s body is super clean, and while the seller points out lots of original details, he doesn’t specify if the paintjob is among them. Regardless, straight lines down the side make it hard to fault, and the chrome wheels and bumpers contrast the miles of red paint nicely. The Chevy doesn’t have any windows in the side panels, so maximum privacy is assured. The windows sport some period yellow tint, and while I normally loathe tint, it actually works here.

Check out the inside: maximum 70s, right down the painted mural on the wood paneling. The bed area looks fairly recent and clean enough to sleep in right now. The wood paneling continues across the roof sections and looks like a clean install. Curtains provide additional privacy when the yellow tint isn’t sufficient, and a “Hippie Bead” partition/curtain creates the illusion of stepping into a second roof when departing the front captain’s chairs for the lounge areas.

The seller notes the Chevy is equipped with a powerful 350 V8 that is amplified via headers and a Flowmaster exhaust system. The engine is hooked up to a smooth-shifting TH350 automatic that also works quite well, and the van is optioned with power steering, power disc brakes, and working A/C. The suspension is noted as being tight without any issues, and hopefully its longtime California residence has kept things clean and easy-to-turn underneath should improvements become necessary. I suspect the short wheelbase vans will steadily appreciate over time, making this example one to watch.

I ordered a 75 Chevy shortie van and it didn’t have the external body crease above the rear wheels. I believe this is a 1977 van.

And the body crease is only on one side? Panel replacement?

Looks like the old Roadkill van.

Builder did a good job of re-creating a mostly authentic looking period correct van. Definitely not a ’70’s original but still nice.

I may be paranoid, but I have trouble with a seller being excessive in his praise of the virtues of a vehicle, then supplements his description with a thorough “as is” caveat. I guess it’s just a case of an overly enthusiastic salesman, using prudent business practices.

Googling the phone number, guy is currently a realtor in both CA and ID, and former salesman in other industries. What would it take to get you in this van today?

Nice vehicle none-the-less, but I’d prefer it to be completely original.

The ad is way over hyped and comes across as wildly inauthentic. The driver’s side (only) body crease stands out as a major question. “This 74 C/10 Chevy van” is repeated as the opening for every other sentence is anything but “prudent business practices.”

By “prudent business practice”, i was referring to his extensive “as is” disclaimer.

I love the zoomie exhaust. I can’t get past the mismatched sides though. Kinda bothers me builder would let that slide. What else was done to a ” good enough” level. Sketchy is an adjective that springs to mind. Dig the vibe but I’d grow tired of explaining the quarters at every cruise. Just saying.

I remember chevy putting that crease on the drivers side. We thought at the time it was a parking lot door dinger preventer, but looking back it might have been an effort to put some strength in that panel along w chevy lack of vertical ribs (compared to dodge).
