The Mariachi: 1982 Ford B-150 Carryall

When it comes to automobiles, every market and part of the world has its own interests and needs. This has led to car manufacturers offering models catered to specific markets, some of which are pretty interesting and rarely seen here in the States, like the Brazilian-built Chevrolet Opala we featured recently. This Ford B-150 Carryall is a Mexican market product, often called the Mariachi, and now that they are over 25 years old, more are starting to make their way north! If you’ve been on the hunt for something that offers lots of utility while also being unique, you can find this truck here on craigslist in Houston, Texas with an asking price of $16,900. Special thanks to Tony P for this tip!

Ford has operations around the world and has long offered a wide range of products to meet the needs of various markets. While there are some really interesting Fords that never made their way to America, many are starting to as they get older. As cool as that is, there are often challenges and added expenses involved with importing something from the other side of the globe. That shouldn’t be much of an issue with a rig like this though, as all the mechanical parts are shared with the US market’s F-150 and they drive on the same side of the road in Mexico as we do here.

This really is one of the most unusual designs we’ve seen from a major manufacturer, with its single door for entry into the rear passenger area. In the back, you’ll find seating for five in an arrangement similar to what you would find in a passenger van. Clearly, these were built for hauling people on rough roads. Its unusual shape would make it stand out in parking lots or at car shows!

Power is provided by a carbureted 302 cui V8 which is paired to a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller states that it runs well, was recently treated to a full service, and is believed to only have 78k kilometers or about 48k miles. The underside looks pretty rough for having so few miles, but chances are they were a rough 48k miles.

It might not be some flashy import, but this Ford could be a really cool vehicle to have. The fact that it’s essentially just an F-150 means parts will be easy to get, it offers tons of utility and is truly unique looking. So what do you think, would this be a great rig to haul the family to car shows in?

    yup, a few around, seen B4. But…
different side window configuration than this. This a p/u I
believe. I’m more familiar w/it done to a 2nd/3rd gen bronk.
Lots of ‘this model’ 20, 30 yrs earlier only had 3 dor (suburban, IH, etc) 1st 1/2 decade of their production. So not too hard to take. Mine’d have -0- seats back there
    8^ )
Thanks Josh (nxt one? the 400M under-hood!)

An interesting vehicule, its always fun to see how the big three did things differently while staying familiar in other countries to match demand. Dig the instrument cluster. As per rough, this one is a cobbled up nightmare that was maintained with whatever was lying around. The engine bay is a mess, and i love the battery holdown and the rats nest for wiring. Can only love the single exhaust with an old glasspack. Sorry but aint for me but it might find someone

I can dig it. Even though it is essentially an F-series, it reminds me of an E-series Econoline hybrid. Wonder how many are rolling around south of the border and how much they go for there (?).

Neat vehicle, but I agree, this one appears to have been cobbled together. Someone painted the inside door panels and the dash with a can of wal mart spray paint and the seats look like they came out of a 2010 to 2014 or so F150. I could see $16,900 if it was mint with original parts and the AC blowing ice cold. As it sits….it looks like a $4,500 hunting rig to me.

The mismatched screws holding the steering wheel on kinda set the tone for the rest of the truck.

I’m way more interested in the VW bus in the background . . .

These were built by Ford de Mexico as a chassis with partial cab, and the wagon bodies finished by third-party manufacturers, which accounts for the variations in configuration between examples.
