The Right Look: 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

This 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer proves that with the right accessories and stance, square body SUVs are among the best looking rigs out there. Featuring loads of recent maintenance and some tasteful upgrades, this rust-free example benefits from over $17,000 in service in just the last two years, which seems like a huge amount of work for a truck that is known for being fairly stout. This, coupled with low mileage of just over 100,000, makes me wonder why a previous owner felt so much work was needed, unless they just wanted a rig that could go into the wilderness without any fear of a break-down. Find it here on eBay where bids are just over $11K with no reserve.

Now, I can certainly understand lavishing a truck of this nature with a ton of work because generally speaking, their values can justify such an investment. But the seller notes that part of the $17K in work included a rebuilt engine block, which again seems unusual for a low-mileage example. Plus, the general condition of the Grand Wagoneer suggests it wasn’t left in a field to rot for decades before being revived. Regardless, the next owner will get to enjoy the peace of mind that comes with an engine block that has a two-year warranty attached to it, and it just passed the stringent California smog test. Those meaty tires are new as well.

The interior looks to be in respectable condition, with handsome fake wood trim and a steering wheel with an attractive wrap on it. The tan carpets show no major soiling, and the door panels look clean as well. It even looks to retain a factory cassette deck. The seller notes that a previous owner installed a variety of odd storage compartments, which do look slightly out of place but also appear to have been custom made for the Grand Wagoneer interior. He contends they work well enough to live with, and given they occupy space that would otherwise be unused, I suppose their existence is justified. The seller notes all power functions, from the seats to the windows, work as intended.

The engine bay has seen a fair amount of work, including the aforementioned replacement block, along with the conversion to a Howell Fuel Injection setup. Other updates include all new gaskets, plugs, wires, radiator, mounts, vacuum hoses, water hoses, resealed transfer case, balanced driveshafts, completely new differential and axle, front differential service, new shocks and springs, new steering stablizer and more. My goodness, this Waggy has been gone through from front to back and top to bottom, just in time for the owner to sell it along to a new caretaker. Seems to me that if the work was done to a high level, anything under $20K is a good deal for the buyer.

    Cool rig.
    I’d rather put my money into a Scout, but lots of folks like these.
    I’m sure that roof rack hums with a racket. What take off the original roof rails? And also that looks like a lot of fluid reservoirs in the engine bay. The ebay ad shows lots of great detailed photos. I certainly wouldn’t kick it out of the garage.

    Let the next owner justify expenses. Nice post Jeff !

    I Was going to refute that the Wagoneer still existed in 1990 after Chrysler took over AMC/Jeep/Eagle but I’d be mistaken. Appears they stayed around until the parts source ran out around ’90/91. The Grand Cherokee line was Chrysler’s only interest in AMC and it worked out. Chrysler probably owns the namesake, stand by for the 2025 Fiat Wagoneer !

      Only interest? What about the XJ Cherokees and the CJ’s?

    @chrlsful “kinda reliability”?
    I owned 2 of these when new; an ‘87 and a ‘91. Each was essentially trouble-free when I owned them. (we’ll avoid discussing gas mileage tho)
    I might still have the ‘91 now, but I allowed myself to be seduced by the Range Rover mystique……now we can discuss “reliability”…….

    The description says the 2-year engine warranty started in December, 2017, so it should have expired now. Still a nice-looking vehicle though.
