Three-Row Traveler: 1972 Dodge Monaco Sport Wagon

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you’re longing for some nostalgia from the days when automakers offered station wagon availability on their flagship models, this 1972 Dodge Monaco Sport Wagon here on Craigslist might be right up your alley.  The Monaco received a new front-end treatment for ’72, featuring those sleek hide-a-way headlights on top of a reshaped bumper, making this one a stylish family cruiser from just about any angle.  The wagon is in Sidney, British Columbia, roughly four hours from Blaine, Washington, and comes with an asking price of $27,500.

T.J., thanks a lot for your fun tip here!  The seller says he’s only the third owner and mentions his wagon comes with a folder full of bills and receipts from throughout the years.  The original drivetrain is still intact, with this one being powered by the standard 360 V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor, rated at 210 horsepower.  However, it’s important to remember that 1972 was the year when HP ratings changed across the board from gross to net, so that’s not a bad entry-level motor.  This one’s said to run and drive well and is great on long cruises, and that’s a fine-looking 2 1/2 inch exhaust system underneath, with Flowmaster mufflers plus a crossover pipe.

The outside was resprayed about 20 years ago, and for the finish to look this good all these years later, it seems apparent the exterior has been given some care along with favorable storage conditions.  There’s no word on whether or not any bodywork has ever been done, but I’m not spotting any concerning gaps or areas with obvious corrosion issues.  Rolling on 17-inch rims, the white-letter Goodyear Eagles also add a sporty touch, and the roof rack seems capable of holding plenty of additional luggage for an extended road trip.

New vinyl upholstery from SMS Auto Fabric has just been added to the seats and door panels, and it’s pretty cool that this one’s also equipped with a third row, so a couple of extra occupants can be added for a long journey.  We don’t get to see a photo of the dash or instrument panel, but the seller states that all gauges are functioning properly and the factory AM radio is still cranking out tunes through the original rear speakers.  I’m not finding a whole not here not to like, but am curious what our readers are thinking about the price tag of $27,500.  Is this a reasonable price to pay for what you’re getting here?

That could be $35,000 US dollars, and that would be fine by me! This is THE wagon to own… With a 440 of course!

I’ve one, a ’73 with 440, dual A/C, and every options available !!!! Big car, but thirsty and not very nervous, my ’57 Imperial and Mercury beat him !

Since this is a local ad in Canada, I’d think that is correct. That’s $20,025 in USD. I’d say that’s a pretty good deal for this beauty.

Just because it’s in great shape doesn’t mean it’s worth it’s weight in gold.

The green guts are unfortunate, but man that front end styling is amazing……

I happen to like green guts. What’s unfortunate is how you can’t get colored interiors anymore, or match your interior to your exterior unless they’re both black.

Never thought that wagons would become as popular as 2 door models but i have had a few and get just as many thumbs up.This dodge looks very nice-very clean.

Where have all the wagons gone? I’ll tell you where, they attended every demo derby in county fairs all across the country, after the Imperials were banned, the “long roof” became the car of choice. With the choices of family haulers today, a wagon makes more sense. Too bad not many survived. If the lack of attention whilst driving it didn’t kill it, the demo derby did. The condition is truly amazing, again, just shows to go what’s in those garages, and this seller knows how rare a car like this is. 5 figures for an old Dodge wagon? Preposterous, yet, here we are.

That’s for sure ! I did exactly 50 derbies back then, and nearly every car I entered was a wagon . You could get them for less then $100 , just put a battery in it and GO ; the owners were glad to see it leave their driveway .

My mother-in-law had a ’72 wagon, one of the biggest cars I’d seen in quite a while. We were driving a 356 C coupe at the time and the hood on that car was only a few inches shorter than the car. I’ve got a lot of hours driving big boats and that big wagon felt just like one. Never did get a good feel where the sides and front/rear of that car were. Certainly a good example of the cars here.

Now that’s what I would call an America Land Yacht, and I absolutely love it! I think the width of the car is wider than the average back road here in UK. I think the biggest Yank Tank that I ever owned back in South Africa was either a ’68 Chrysler New Yorker or a ’72 Cadillac Limo. When I was 17, in what was then Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, my first US car was a ’41 Chrysler Windsor, all wonderful cars.

Good luck finding a buyer. All of those previous commenters are not going to buy this wagon. They are all talk. For $25,000, this needs to be a top model Monoco that is fully optioned. It needs to look like it just came off the showroom floor. This one falls noticeably short of that. It looks like the owner thought a rod would be cool. It’s not. This was a beginning model Monoco wagon used as a family hauler and nothing more. The cool Monoco wagons had wood sides and all of the power options and more. I remember!

I agree with you. While it looks like a nice car and I am not a buyer, it sounds like an awful lot of money. I never cared for the woodgrain on these, but for this kind of money it should be in place and in perfect condition.

Saw a 62′ Comet 2 – door wagon, wood vinyl sides for $ 8,900 in Goodyear AZ today.

I don’t believe that a ‘62 Comet wagon was offered with woodgrain. Perhaps someone installed it at a later date.

Nice car; I owned it’s one-step-down sister, a ’72 Polara Custom wagon in the same colors. But…
This thing is VERY poorly optioned for a Monaco, and there was no such thing as a “sport Monaco” from Dodge – that reflects aftermarket changes. The nameplates are missing, the silver accent is completely gone from the taillights, and more – I’m guessing that, along with oversized wheels and white letter tires, makes it “sport.” I’ll pass.
Way overpriced, Mike. I’ve been seeing this wagon for sale on various sites for well over a year. No doubt the price is why. A fully-loaded, all-original 90-point survivor might approach that buckage, but not this one. Not by a long shot. Sorry to be so negative, and I’m a die-hard Mopar wagon guy who would love to have a 72 or 73 Monaco wagon.

I think it’s beautiful for the age, fully documented and something I would own. With gas prices sky rocketing a 360 sounds perfect, especially TTI exhaust.

There’s no such thing as a Monaco “Sport” wagon. Yes, it’s a Monaco wagon, but Dodge never used the term “Sport”

If the BC seller wants to sell it to someone from the US, they need an export permit from the feds. Yes, you can just drive it into the US, but once the feds get wind of it, the seller will see a hefty penalty coming straight at them.
