Three Row Wagon: 1986 Ford Crown Victoria

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The introduction of the Chrysler minivan created a hot new segment in the automotive industry in 1984, and one that would cut into consumer demand for the tried-and-true station wagon.  However, even with fresh competition on the market, wagons soldiered on for a while longer, with this 1986 Ford Crown Victoria here on Craigslist seeming to still be a capable family mover at almost 40 years old.  This one was sold new in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and that’s where it remains today.  If you’ve been looking for a nostalgic way to travel this summer, it’s probably worth a look, but I’d at least try to negotiate the asking price of $16,500 down a bit.  Our thanks go out to reader Tony Primo for the tip!

With 108,000 miles of driving, this one’s probably been far from Albuquerque a few times, but being stationed in NM has been kind to the body.  The seller says there’s no rust on the exterior or frame, and the panels appear to remain straight all the way around. No word on whether there’s ever been a respray, but the outside appearance seems satisfactory as-is, and it’s great to see there’s a roof rack on top.  Unfortunately, the wheel covers seem to have gone the way of the Griswolds’ Country Squire wagon, after Clark made that wrong turn in St. Louis.

The interior condition also seems OK for a driver, with some expected wear plus a couple of imperfections here and there.  A few nice accessories can be spotted from the photos, such as a tilt wheel, power windows, and a power driver’s seat.  However, probably the best feature inside is the additional rear seating, which also folds down if extra storage space is a priority more than room for further occupants.

The seller tells us that the 302 runs great and mentions it’s recently gotten a fresh tune-up, along with a new fuel pump and brake master cylinder.  There’s also been an A/C conversion to 134a refrigerant, with the air inside said to be blowing cold.  With SUV family travel being so popular today, it’s refreshing to see a mid-eighties station wagon still on the road, especially one that looks this good on the outside, and I’m thinking someone will snatch this one up fairly quickly.  What are your impressions of this 1986 Ford Crown Victoria wagon, and its cost of $16,500?

Neat car, but $16,500 is far beyond its worth.

Oh for a set of whitewall tires and stock wheel covers.

Too many digits in the price. These were great cars. Super dependable 5.0/AOD. Decent fuel economy- and lots of room. Unfortunately, it’s also a great example of how Ford abuses the names of its memorable successes. Where’s the Crown Victoria? Inside? Cougar station wagons, and a 4 door “Mustang” EV. 😖

I think the seller spend to much time on social media watching those Mecum Auction shorts about what cats sell for. It needs some raised white letter tires and baby moon hub caps.

Just coming from the 29K 307 Malibu, this doesn’t seem all that bad of an asking price.

In other words, EVERYTHING is overpriced right now.

No wheel covers? Stained seats? C’mon man, shampoo the seats, put some cheepo Auto Zoo wheel covers on that thing for crying out loud. Still, waaaay to high of a price no matter what.
