Tidy Mach 1 Tribute: 1970 Ford Mustang Fastback

With values climbing for the 1970 Mustang Mach 1, some enthusiasts turn their attention to well-executed tribute vehicles as a more affordable option. That is the opportunity provided by this Mustang Fastback. It was refurbished to its current form around twenty-five years ago, and although it isn’t perfect, it is an excellent prospect for someone seeking a driver-grade classic that will turn heads.

I have long considered the First Generation Mustang to be the automotive equivalent of Lego Blocks. By that, I mean that it is possible to create something special from a collection of parts and components. Our feature car is a perfect example of that thinking, starting life as a relatively meek and mild Fastback. A previous owner sourced the spoilers and associated trim pieces to create a genuinely attractive Mach 1 tribute. The seller is unsure when the build occurred, stating that they believe it was somewhere between twenty-five and thirty years ago. The fact that it remains so well presented suggests no corners were cut. The Wimbledon White paint retains a healthy shine, with the seller admitting that a close inspection will reveal minor chips and marks. However, if considered purely as a driver-grade vehicle, it has no needs or shortcomings. The panels are straight, and there is no evidence of rust. The spoilers and trim are in good order, as is the glass. The builder selected Cragar wheels which perfectly suit this Mustang’s character.

This Mustang rolled off the line equipped with a 302ci V8 that generated 220hp and 300 ft/lbs of torque. The first owner teamed the V8 with a three-speed automatic transmission and power assistance for the steering and brakes. Its performance would have been acceptable, but the builder believed that any Mach 1 tribute deserved something more. Therefore, the 302 was consigned to a dusty corner of the workshop, and a 351 took its place. The upgrades also included a 3.55 Traction-Lok rear end that should guarantee impressive acceleration. The specifications of the new powerplant are unclear, but it would be a realistic expectation for it to produce at least 300hp and 380 ft/lbs. The seller indicates that the tires are old and there is a minor exhaust leak. However, they appear to be its only mechanical shortcomings. It runs and drives extremely well, and with those two issues addressed, it will be ready to hit the road with the winning bidder behind the wheel.

The first owner teamed this Mustang’s Wimbledon White exterior with Tan interior vinyl to create a subtle and classy look. The seller states that while many interior pieces were replaced during the build, it occurred at a time when reproduction parts weren’t as readily available as they are today. Therefore, items like the door trims are original. That doesn’t detract from the overall presentation, which is tidy and clean. The dash, pad, and console are excellent. The interior features air conditioning that may require attention to blow ice-cold. There is also a Sport Deck rear seat, a column-mounted tachometer, and speakers in the back suggesting there could be an upgraded stereo.

Parking a genuine and tidy 1970 Mustang Mach 1 with a 351 under the hood in your garage will cost at least $40,000 in the current market, but tributes offer a similar motoring experience for significantly less. The seller listed our feature car here on eBay in Brooklyn, Iowa. The auction action has pushed the price to $20,200, which is below the reserve. However, with twenty-six bids submitted, it appears that plenty of people want their slice of the classic motoring action. Are you tempted to join them?

“Tribute”, “Clone”. The automotive equivalent of putting on a George Clooney mask before posting your image on a Senior Citizens dating site.

I’m not tempted per se but I do like it.. sans the rear window louvre. I love the Wimbledon white combination with the tan/brown interior, and I agree with the seller, it would be a fun car to take to local get togethers or just to cruise down the highway in.

I really appreciate when sellers post their cars as what it truly is and not what it never was. This is a super good looking Mustang. Love the color combination. Definitely a head turner. I hope it finds a good home and good luck to the seller.

There’s nothing wrong with a tribute or clone, as long as someone does not misrepresent when selling it. And there’s a lot here to like, I’d be proud to drive this one.
