Tii In The Weeds: 1972 BMW 2002

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1972 BMW 2002 Tii is listed by the son of the previous owner, who sadly isn’t going to have time to restore the car. Unfortunately, it doesn’t run, it doesn’t roll, and it has rust in a variety of locations. The suggestion is made in the listing that it may be a candidate for parting out, which is a shame considering it looks to remain largely complete. Find it here on craigslist for $5,000.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Sol for the find. At $5K, that’s a pricey ask for a car destined for parting out. And really, unless the rust is way worst than what I can see here, the car is worthy of a rescue. The interior remains very complete, right down to the Tii-specific clock still mounted on the dash. The seats look to have survived beneath OEM-correct sheepskin covers, and the period wood steering wheel is a treat.

The engine bay shows plenty of evidence of prolonged outdoor storage, which invites the possibility of rodents nests and chewed wiring. The Tii-specific components appear to still be present in this photo and the front shock mounts don’t appear to be cancerous. A big topic of conversation in the 2002 community is whether the nose panel has been replaced; many are, but who knows Tif this one is original.

Photos show surface rust, rust near the jack points and along the lower sills, and some panel misalignment. The 2002 also appears to be wearing a set of period-correct basketweave alloy wheels. Photos inside the trunk show rear strut housings to not be cancerous, so I’m increasingly of the mind this 2002 Tii should be restored. I’ve seen (and own) cars in far worst condition cosmetically, so let’s save this one.

This is down the road from me and has been for sale for some time now. I resisted seeing it because of the condition. Yes it’s a tii, but add up the value to restore or part out, and I’m not sure it’s there. I’ve been wrong so many times and this could be another one of those times, but I personally don’t see a path to success here at that price point.

Gone – Not pricey at all, these bring huge $$ on the BMW market. Someone can flip this as-is for $10K + without doing anything but pulling it out of the weeds and inflating the tires.
