Too Far Gone? 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Introduced in the Fall of 1964 (as a 1965 model), the Ford Mustang fastback has become one of the most desirable body styles today. The seller has a 1968 edition (or 1967, as the seller seems undecided). It’s in rough shape, especially in terms of corrosion, so this Mustang was probably sitting outside for many years. Located in Aragon, Georgia, this “opportunity” is available here on eBay, where $21,500 gets to take it home.

The Mustang got its first styling refresh in 196,7, and that may have been driven by the need to enlarge the engine compartment for big block powerplants. The 1968 versions were little changed physically, with the addition of side marker lights being an obvious giveaway. The 302 cubic inch V8 replaced the 289 in the middle of the year. Since the seller’s car has outlines of where side marker lights could have been, that might make this a ’68 model. Also, we’re told this is a “J”-code Mustang, the designation for a ’68 with a 302.

While the seller says this Ford has the normal amount of common rust, I’d say it goes deeper than that. The photos provided portray a vast amount of crusty material on the unibody undersides. We’re told the Mustang is “pretty much” complete, but you’re going to have to make a list of stuff to replace anyway. The interior is quite rough, but it looks like this pony was ordered with the deluxe upholstery.

This is a non-running car, but the seller doesn’t say if the engine is stuck. A C4 automatic transmission is also along for the ride. The condition of the car doesn’t lend itself to being a donor, so performing a restoration will have to be in the cards. And that won’t come cheaply.

“This Ford has the normal amount of common rust”…for a car that’s been parked at the other end of an anchor chain for years. O Brother Y Bother.

Ok not worth near that money, now if it was reasonable you could buy a body. With a lot of elbow grease clean up the parts and assemble a pretty complete Mustang. Would not be for the faint of heart for sure. Job for a young man as this would be a time consuming project.

This seller has listed rust and scale for sale several times before. This one might be the highest priced piece yet, not worth a tenth of the asking price.

Indeed he has DA & has found a buyer (sucker?) every time. It’s essentially a junkyard. I live in Georgia & not far from the place. Talk about a belly flop. You’d stay upside down forever on this

May he get every penny he’s asking for. Every time one of these roached out ‘Stangs gets stupid money? I look at my driver quality 10 footer, and smile…

This seller/dealer has been featured on this site many times. Most of what he sells is worse than this. Fastbacks are hard to find and have been desirable for decades. If someone local to the car is interested and is willing to take on a big project they should take a look. Mustangs tend to rust on the top of the inner fenders fore and aft of the shock towers, that’s not present in this car. It’s something I wouldn’t bother with, but there are people out there who might.

Last time I saw seats tipping back like that was in my ’68 Fairlane, when I picked up one of my housemates in college. She got it and the seat tipped backwards and then came forward again. Because there was nothing left for the front of the seats to attach themselves to. Peeled back the floor mat and saw the driveway. Hard pass on this one.

Was it in a fire? Why is the interior so crusty?

Maybe I don’t have my head in the right place. Shouldn’t I get a running car for that money?

The automatic transmission is a deal breaker for me. Oh yeah and the ask does seem quite optimistic. But what do I know. One thing I do know for certain is that I will never again own a ‘67 or ‘68 Mustang fastback. Prices are in fantasy land as far as I am concerned. For the kind of money that the owner of this sad pony wants I could buy a really nice collector car and be happy.

So sad to see something like this. What was once something nice to have is now just a piece of rusted junk. In his most deep psychedelic trip, he might get $2K for it. Ten times that??? Never in his wildest dreams or trips.I still don’t know what to make of the interior. Whether the dash melted or just rotted away, it just looks scary! There is no floor inside, since I can see the steering column from the ground. I can’t even see this being something to start with, since everything needs replacing. Might just as well crush it and get something with about 500 pounds of rust less on it. You would have better luck than trying to restore this.
