Too Many Doors? 1969 Buick Skylark Custom

Buick’s A-body intermediates in the late 1960s comprised the Special, Skylark, Skylark Custom, Sport Wagon, and Gran Sport. The Skylark Custom was for those buyers who wanted more pizazz than the Special and Skylark offered, without the performance of the GS or the space of the wagon. The seller has used this ’69 Skylark Custom as a daily driver for the past three years. It’s far from perfect, but the asking price of $4,000 no doubt reflects that. Located in Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, this family sedan is available here on eBay (and as a tip from Rocco B.).

Six times as many buyers went for the Skylark Custom Sport Coupe in 1969 as the 4-door sedan, 35,600 units vs. 6,400. The sedan had the least demand of the five body styles offered. While sedans don’t attract as many collectors today as hardtops, when was the last time you saw one of these rides? Of the four intermediate brands sold by General Motors, the Skylark had perhaps the most unusual styling when compared to the Chevelle, LeMans, and Cutlass.

The seller bought this white-on-blue Skylark from its second owner in 2023. It was purchased new in Atlanta, so perhaps it’s been a Georgia car all its life. During his/her stewardship, the gas tank, shock absorbers, water pump, fuel pump, and more have been replaced or rebuilt. It runs well but has a transmission fluid leak as well as a coolant lea,k and the factory air conditioning no longer works at 52,000 miles (original?).

No mention is made of rust, and the paint is original and in fair-to-good condition. The interior has survived similarly. The tires are newer, so that’s probably an expense you can avoid. All in all, the seller has found the Buick to be dependable and “drives better than my newer cars.” If you don’t care about door count, this could be an inexpensive way to get into the vintage car scene.

I can’t believe this hasn’t sold yet! It looks nice to me, even at $6,000, let alone $4,000. It has to sell this time.

It also didn’t sell earlier this month when it was listed for $5,500obo, which seemed pretty fair. There is a lot of love expressed for 4drs on this site that doesn’t seem to exist elsewhere.

If anything, the Buick styling works better on these than the coupe. That extra 4″ of wheelbase lets the side sweep breathe a lot more. Pity they didn’t pair it with the full rear wheel arches they used in the ’50s, the haunches still look too heavy. And if the only A body was the Buick, the Colonnades would be better remembered than this generation.

$6,000-$5,500-$4,000 ??? I really can’t see any of that. Let’s start with the ugly: 4 doors, bench seat, auto on the column, vinyl top, wheel covers. Now for the bad: coolant leak, transmission leak, a/c not working. Now for the good: it’s not my car. On a perfect day, and i mean a perfect day, I’ll say $2,000 MAX.

4 doors are ugly? I would bet your daily driver has at least that many.

I’m with TimS! Having to pick up friends, and carpool, the 4 door is just so much better! I see the 4 door as a plus not a minus! Like others have wrote, it is hard to believe it hasn’t sold! Love the color combination and vinyl top too!

What a find! If I was anywhere closer, I’d be all over this. I’d gamble that a cutting and polishing would do wonders for the paint, and a good interior cleaning likewise would really help.

As for the fixes, the nice thing on this car is that they are just that – fixes, and fixable.

    What’s goofier looking than a 2 door Skylark, a 4 door.
2x the weird, soon to be changed styling.
Sorry, couldn’t pay me to own this

Under appreciated styling. So much better looking than the plain Jane ’70-’72. Plus you still have the vent windows. I like it.

not a popular body style for sure and you add 4dr @ 4k and you are now wearing a hat. good that the seller listed the problems but the 2 major 1s should have been fixed. coolant leak most likely the timing cover, trans is either the gasket or a seal. the a/c compressor the clutch is hanging out of it, so we know what that is. all considered and the fact that this cat just can’t be bothered to fix any of it or even clean it up for the listing says a lot. 2k would be fair but i bet he won’t take it.

If you don’t like 4 door cars then please scroll past. There are plenty of cut and paste muscle cars out there for you that I wouldn’t look at twice. Those comments add nothing.

I know, right? But it’s all two cents buys us.

That’s how I feel about people losing their mind over making a Malibu an SS or newer wheels on a classic… If ya don’t like it move on!

The ’68-’69 Skylark sedans get my vote for dowdiest car of the 1960s. It looks like something a retired spinster school teacher would drive to church.

Agree. I don’t even like the coupes from those two years much. Every other GM A body those years got it right. Buick did “fix” the look though in 1970.

1970 Buick GSX, best looking Buick from 1970-1979. And yes, it’s a two door.
