From its introduction as a special edition in 1958, the Impala would go to be one of Chevy’s best-selling automobiles. The fifth generation may have been the most popular, built from 1965-70 with styling updates each year to keep things fresh. This 1969 Impala convertible is a project that’s been in storage for the past seven years and needs someone to restore it. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, this drop-top is available here on craigslist for $5,500. Another great tip brought to us by Chuck Foster!
For 1969, all full-size Chevies got new slab-sided bodies with a small “upsweep” at the rear quarter windows, giving them a more formal appearance. Wrap-around bumpers were added in the front and the taillights were more rectangular than oval. Ventless front windows appeared for the first time, with a “power vent” system featuring outlets in the instrument panel. The Impala continued as the tier down from the Caprice and would be the only one of the full-size nameplates to be available as a convertible that year. 14,415 copies were produced, including the seller’s auto.
This convertible is far from perfect and will need sheet metal work, including both rear quarter panels and the passenger compartment and trunk floors. The seller indicates the VIN is not available, which is odd for a car that we’re told has a clean title. While the exterior has its share of problems, things are looking up in the interior, with the upholstery in passable shape although the door panels need some work. We’re not sure of the condition of the canvas top.
Under the hood resides a non-running 327 cubic inch V8, which was in its last year at Chevy. The 350 would take over those duties in 1970 and beyond. This drop-top has factory air conditioning, but since the belt is missing, we assume that it functions no better than the motor and automatic transmission. The seller believes this Impala is priced to move i.e., “if you can find one for under $5,500 in this condition, you’d better not hesitate.” So, would you jump on it?
I agree, it’s on a trailer, but it’s certainly no queen!
That rot looks widespread. “If I find a better one…” Yep.
One of these was my first car as freshly licensed 16 year old. I imagine it started out like this one cuz after the first fender bender the bondo was about a quarter inch thick in the entire rear quarters. I would love to buy this and get back running but not at that price.
This car is in my city and I still wouldn’t bother to go look at it..LOL
Hmmm. As evidenced by the red cloth top, custom door panels, missing body side moldings, and larger radius wheel wells – this had large diameter wheels & tires installed at one time. Someone’s abandoned dream – or nightmare.
327 cid came standard with a 2bbl. No 4bbl available. Only year Chevrolet did that (excluding trucks). 10 bolt rear end. Nothing unusual, accept maybe that base engine with A/C.
A flipper with that rented trailer, I suppose…
Is it still available
