Triple Black Project: 1969 Dodge Charger SE

One of the most popular cars that turn up here on Barn Finds is the second-generation Dodge Charger (1968-70). A lot of them were built, at least two had prominent movie/TV roles (hence they became famous), and they did a nice job of combining style, performance, and luxury. This ’69 Charger is thought to have been an SE, but there is no longer a fender tag to verify it. It runs well enough but isn’t numbers matching in terms of what’s in the car but also comes with its original engine/transmission. Located in Mountlake, Washington, this triple-black Mopar is available here on eBay. The current bid is $35,000, but the reserve is unmet.

This Charger has a 383 cubic inch V8, but it’s the milder one with a 2-barrel carburetor and it came out of a ’68 Charger. The automatic transmission was claimed from a ’66 Chrysler Imperial. We’re not treated to a photo of things under the hood or of the original 383 and TorqueFlite that came out at some point but go with the sale and both need rebuilding (high mileage? — the seller doesn’t indicate the odometer reading). The Dodge has been converted to 4-wheel disc brakes and the tires are new.

From the looks of things, this could be an SE given the level of materials used in the interior. It also has bucket seats and a console. The triple-black color combination has always appealed to me, though the mostly original paint is showing its age, and the vinyl top is said to need a rework due to a poor installation (so it’s not original?). Except for one piece, we’re told all the chrome trim is there.

Older patchwork is present on the car, which the seller has owned for 30 years. That includes the quarter panels and trunk. More recently, the interior has been refreshed with new carpeting and a headliner. While we’re told the Charger runs well, driving it will be a bit odd. The transmission linkage is there but the kickdown is not connected so you’ll have to shift the transmission manually until you fix it. This car once had factory A/C, but it’s since flown the coop. Other things will need attending to like the wipers, so this could be thought of as a project car that could easily be a daily driver.

No fender tag? How does that happen?

Repaint at some point in it’s life. 54 years go by and sh#t happens.

The fender tag must have rusted away

Yeah I question If it an S-E I’ve owned many 1968 – 1970 and lot newer ones

From the photos I’ve been seeing. I’m trying to figure out where there’s 35 grand

Hell, I had nicer ones than this. That were
440 an Stick cars. I couldn’t get near the money for and they weren’t rot buckets. There were a lot nicer than this .one

I don’t even see if it’s even got the rally gauge pack. I don’t see badging anywhere.

Almost every SE series I’ve ever had had. Usually, all gauges an Tac. And as for the original paint is it the original top

From the information i’ve got so far it looks like just some old Dodge Charger some body thinks it’s worth gold.

You can find a pretty nice six pack car and four speed. 440 or 383. For that. K Money

I guess some people can dream.
And some people are just delusional.

answer the question about the SE badges. Yes, they’re really proud of those on those cars. The door panels usually have a big round one about the size of a silver dollar on most of them And it would say SE other places on the vehicle, I’d like to see the serial numbers and hell of a lot more photos and door panel.Tags

Baron, you are, without ANY doubt, way out of touch with the market on ’68-’70 Chargers. You show me ONE, just one, 440 4/speed Charger (which would be an R/T because that’s the ONLY way you got that combination) for $35,000 and I will buy it, sight unseen, right now. I will buy EVERY ONE you can find for that kind of money. Those are six-figure cars these days. You have no idea what these cars are worth. It’s been well over 20 years since you could touch one of those cars for that kind of money, lol!!!

If I remember right, an SE would have SE badging, on the c-pillar or somewhere

Don’t see any other SE items on this one.
    Bet, not an SE.
I will not say what I see is missing because without tag or build sheet, no A47 confirmation.

Another overpriced MoPar. Bet that is rust under that vinyl top.

It’s called high demand, not overpriced. They are all getting high, and obviously they are bringing the money as they just keep on selling higher and higher.

Wouldn’t the Vin number tell you if it is a true se or not.

      I don’t believe VIN#s reflect trim levels

1st two letters of the VIN should be XP for an SE. XS designates an R/T.

Them wheels also don’t belong they are from a challenger or Baracuda and them buckets look like their from a R/T.

“Them wheels” (lol) were used from ’70-’78 on a multitude of cars in various widths and diameters.

If you can find ANY 68-70 Charger at/below $50,000 buy it! Decent ones are closer to $75,000.

Gary, I agree! If you can find one cheaper, but it! You do not have to like it, hec you for sure do not have to buy it ( which most cannot on this site) but you have to respect where the market place is at this point of time, and the remaining inventory of these rare cars that are still available, which are very few, that have not been restored. I would wager there is not one person on this site, if you were in the very same position would not want every dime this market would allow! You know it and I know it, so respect the market and seller! Take care.

True these cars are bringing stupid money I had a 68 440 4 speed a 69 rt and a 70 se 318 car all at the same time and all when I was 15 and don’t think I paid more than 1,200.00 for all 3 that was back in the late 70,s . I’d give my right arm for any one of them now. But hey I’m a lefty ,anyone out there got a time machine I can borrow.

SE’s would have just an SE, special edition badge on each C-pillar. All Chargers have the ralley gauge package, just like the pix show in this one. SE’s would have wood grain on the dash. Hard to tell with these pix. Tachs were not standard on an SE either. Those seats are standard 69 Charger upholstery. Possible optioned to leather inserts.

You re correct Rod on all counts, even the leather seat surfaces (on the front seats only), as that was part of the SE package. I owned a 69 SE and a 69 R/T SE at the same time, with sequential serial numbers! One was delivered to the dealership here in town and the other delivered to the next town about 20 miles up the road. Both had the light package, woodgrain dash and console applique and leather seats. Neither one had a tach in them but both had clocks.

I’ll take two of those six packs and two of the four speeds as well for that price! I’d mortgage my house to do it too! You don’t need to be out of the market for long (maybe just three or four years) to not know what these are going for these days. IF you could buy it at the price it currently sits at, you’d be doing pretty good. I’d guess the reserve is above $40k.

Does no one see the massive damage in the picture of passenger side door open inside the car? Right below the door hinges is all smashed in\back towards door opening. This thing is a nightmare that somebody is gonna find out hard way once it gets flat bedded to to their home and they open the doors up. Possibly an ex General Lee stunt car. Or just a wrecked car pulled outta a junk yard.
Either that or someone thought it would be fun to jump a bridge.
