Triple Carb 427! 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Project

Talk about collectible Corvettes, here’s just such an example in the form of a second-year C3, powered by Chevrolet’s legendary 427 CI “Rat” motor. It’s a project but looks like a sound start so let’s check it out. This 1969 Corvette is located in Virginia Beach, Virginia and is available, here on eBay for a BIN price of $35,000. Thanks to Larry D for this tip!

Claimed to be a 63K mile example, this Corvette has been parked for the last twenty years, having been laid-up after undergoing body repair. The seller states that the front fiberglass was, “PROFESSIONALLY REPLACED AND ALL HOOD, HEADLIGHT AND DOOR GAPS ARE EXCELLENT. STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL HOOD THAT HAS HAD SOME REPAIRS THAT WILL NEED TO BE CLEANED UP…” Dressed in raw fiberglass and/or primer, the body and seams of this ‘Vette do look straight and aligned with so sign of separation. The seller further advises that the frame and suspension, along with the birdcage, are straight and very solid. Riverside Gold (code 980) is claimed to have been the original exterior color applied at the St. Louis assembly plant and the trim tag bears that out though there is little evidence of it still visible. Also referenced is the optional side louver trim, it has been installed already but it’s a bit like replacing the windshield wiper blades on a car with a smashed windshield. Nevertheless, it’s a nice option to have that will be a bit more obvious when this Chevy is completely finished. Not mentioned is the existence of the rocker panel trim and some other small, exterior bits.

Power is provided by a 400 gross HP, 427 CI V8 engine known as option RPO L68. Its crowning feature is 1025 CFM of triple Holley two-barrel carburetors. The seller advises that the carbs are service replacements and the engine, “HAS NOT BEEN RUNNING IN 20 YEARS SO THE MOTOR WILL NEED TO BE FRESHENED UP“. It may need a bit more than just a freshening and it would be nice to know if it at least turns over. Obviously, this four-speed manual transmission-equipped big-block is a non-runner.  Other than the missing ignition shielding, the engine compartment does reveal a complete and original-looking engine/accessories. Of note, this ‘Vette is air-conditioned and this motor was the most powerful available with that desirable option.

The saddle tan upholstery is in fair condition. The carpet is a bit mangy looking and the seats are showing some wear but the dash and instrument panel, with what looks like its original radio, checks out. The seller curiously states that the console is in excellent condition but upon further review, he’s referring to the front half as the rear half looks as if someone tried to punch a cup holder through the top of it. The interior will need some additional work and finishing to be brought back up to snuff but it’s a solid basis from which to work.

A ’69 Corvette coupe, common as it is, is always a nice find, especially one equipped with as much grunt under the hood as this one possesses. The bad news is its unfinished state but the good news is that you can see explicitly the condition of the body and it shows to be in pretty tight shape. Considering this ‘Vette’s status, what do you think about the price, just right or not quite?

It may not be the L71 version but that must have some get up and go power! 4 spd too!

Correct me if I’m wrong but 35K is a bit high for the amount needed to finish out the car. Pretty close to upside down before you start. This should be fun when finished.

Way too much for a car needing this much work. We had one listed here last week for $30K that was ready to go needing just some underhood cleaning and some detailing. This is a low $20’s all day long.

Could be a nice project BUT, (1) -Don’t know if the motor will turn over , (2) States a non-readable cowl tag , (3) Lot of work and hidden cost . Not worth 35k in this condition or unknown condition , parked 20 years of sitting problems . IMO – it needs more work 22k -23k is closer to it’s current value . Not worth 35k that’s for sure .

Too much money for sure. But 400s are scarce in contrast to L71s, which need super premium gas and valve adjustments. I had a 71 454 with 3.08s. Didn’t get to 60 that quickly, but my top end speed was about 130 mph. This 69 is in a one year only color and my favorite from that year. A set of redlines will really set thus car off. Plenty of options and a coupe. But yes, his BIN is overly optimistic. Will be a beauty when done.

I have a 71 LS-5, it would top out at 155 mph with 308 and 4 speed. At that speed it was a bad airplane.

The trim tag shows Riverside gold (980) and Saddle interior (420). Black (STD) was the only recommended interior for the color. This had to be a special order.
